I wanted Gothicon in particular to help with this one, but I dont mind advice from others.I have my 840av, can I buy a "cable box" & use it as a tv tuner for my 840av? We are not talking cable tv we are talking terrestrial tv. I will probably end up getting another digital tv box, though if a cable box is £5 then I may get that. Oh yes about the thread title, is your(gothicon) name Al? did you study in Derby? did you have a band named fallen idol? If yes then email me, You remind me of my friend Al, & we had good fun together. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

if you don't want the additional functionality of a VCR, then a small cable box for use as a tuner of over the air channels should be just fine.Official 68k videographer |

I've never actually looked at the back of a cable box which is funny considering how many I've used. However assuming the cable box has the same connectors as the back of your 840 AV it should work fine. Or if you can connect a VCR you can connect a cable box to the 840! In an answer to your other question. I am not Al although I have heard of fallen idol I haven't heard them, unless it was in passing and I just didn't recognise it. I've never actually been to Derby, I spent most of my life living in Edinburgh until I moved to Australia just over a year ago with my g/f. You actually remind me of a guy I sold a whole bunch of old Mac stuff to just before moving out here. He lived in Edinburgh though and I'm 99% certain you don't. Anyway if you're really interested I can be seen at the following places http://www.cybermuppet.co.uk/gallery/EdinburgDec2001/aaq That's me on the right with my friend Mark after some serious alcohol consumption http://www.gothikon.com/vanity/me2.jpg That's me and Mark again, shame you can't see Marks braids but they're all behinf his head. http://www.gothikon.com/vanity/tobias_adam_and_penny.jpg That's me in the middle with my g/f on the right. EDIT - I re-read your question about watching terestrial TV through the cable box. Do you actually have a cable TV connection? You can get the terestrial channels though cable aswell. Otherwise if there is a way of connecting a regular aerial to the cable box the answer is probably but I'm not sure. Edited by - gothikon on 29 Jan 2003 17:20:00 |

The 840av has RCA inputs, right? As long as the cable box has RCA VCR outputs, you Jesuit hook up the 840av to that. All cable boxes don't have those, though, so you'll want to look for that when you buy. The cable box will then act just like a tuner in your TV, just that it wont use any of the decoding circuits because air TV stations are just plain jane RF. If you're stuck with a cable box that doesn't have RCA VCR outputs, you can just go to your local electronics store and get something called a RF demodulator, if you can find one. That goes between the Mac and the cable box's RF connector and converts it to the baseband RCA you need. Just make sure the cable box and the demodulator are both set to the same channel (either 3 or 4) They have little switches on the back. The Lightning Stalker Performa 631CD, 7.5.5 LC III, FPU, 20/80/enet, 7.5.5, Mail Server 6400/180 40/1.6G/512k L2/enet/video-in/TV 7600/120 '604/233, 80/1.2G & 1G/512k L2, 9.2.2 (Main Mac) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc 5.25" 2 Apple IIe |

ewwww the pics are creepy as in I havn't been with that sort of crowd for a while & I really miss it.I wanna go to Rock City in Nottingham. Al was a 6 foot guy, his eyes made you stare but just like staring into space/a black hole? I always hate goths, from media depiction, but usually like them in person. Al had an hilarious sense of humour, but not everyone "got-it" alot like when I tell a joke here, it goes down like a lead ballon, remember my jokes? ie- Can I use my Performa washing machine as a screen for my Perfoma(will the clothes take shape?) lol, I kill myself but I'm the only one :-( "oh the jokes run fast, but the laughings stopped, what a terrible mess I've gotten in" I asked my mum about the cable box thing & she said "no", now my mum isn't the most technical minded but this has given me a good idea of what "I must check for". I saw one of those rf to composite adapter thingies in Maplin, it was there one week & gone the next. I have that Eerie Indiana feeling & assume that odd electrical items all go to a place where someone is employed to loose them. Can I connect to get rf in is the big question as you summise. You mentioned alchohol consumption & it's been a while since I touched it, I was on 10 pints of cider for a night out at one point, If you plan on going to Derby/Notts let me know & it's good fun. No I have been in Edingburgh once & didn't like it much. I USED TO ENJOY DRINKING It's probably a year or so since I last drank, I drink at my works christmas party, I get drunk & dance daft & last time I insulted this guy cos he was allways nasty to ppl, He was my boss the next day & I left the job soon after. TLS explainined it pretty well, Personally I'd just use a VCR if you don't actually have cable. quote:

They specialise in mail order just ring up and order whatever you want or request it when you're in there and they can get one in for you. quote:

You weren't looking then! Edinburgh is truly one of the greatest cities in the UK! quote:

[quote]A friend started chatting up our old boss at my last job in the UK, it was soo funny I was the only one who remembered, of course I made sure everyone else knew the next morning! Although a few months later we were all out again and another friend and I started slagging off or other bosses boyfriend whilst we sat beside her! Oops! Actually there are too many stories to list from that job, like the time our office almost burnt down, or the letter from an IRA member asking us to arrange accomodation and get someone to fix his boiler! or the man we made collect his tickets at the venue! We did it deliberately just so someone would have to shout his name across the crowd, of course that doesn't sound very funny until you realise his name was Mr Spanky!!!!!
