A powermac 8550?(does this exist or does seller not know what he has?) went for £25. I need a new printer, as my 1200 has run out of ink so the printer has to be the priority & besides I'm looking to pick up an 8100/110 or 85xx motherboard cheap in order to use my old 840av case(my dead 840av).The was also a Quadra 610, I would have let my son have her. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

The 8550 was a WorkGroup Server, so it would have come with a "server" version of System 7.5.3.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hardware Page: http://cineware.sytes.net |

Is there a big difference between a normal Mac and a server?. The look the same and have a similiar beefed up OS, but is there any physical difference?Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, SE 4/40, Classic II 4/40, IIx 8/160, IIvi 8/260, Quadra 650 32/260, iMac 333 160/6G How you like d'em apples?! |

Seller quoted 8550/132MHz & it's the 132 which made me suspicious as I could'nt find it on everymac nor LEM.
What is a workgroup server anyway? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

The server should have hardware that's been tested better and be way more stable. They're supposed to be overengineered so that they go down as little as possible. I'd say he replaced the CPU daughtercard with one that has a 132 Mhz 604. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

hmm... I think that the only difference between a WGS and a normal mac, is not in it's hardware, and not in it's system software, but in it's software bundle. the WGS machines included cool things like a web, mail, file and other server and all sorts of junk... even Claris Home Page somethingorotherOfficial 68k videographer |

Ok, that sort of explains it but can you run the server software on a newer mac. Can you OS 8.1 server on an iMac or a beige G3?, or even more useful OS 7.1 server on a LC 475 I have in my basement?. I know windows people like to run windows 2000 server on their desktops...Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, SE 4/40, Classic II 4/40, IIx 8/160, IIvi 8/260, Quadra 650 32/260, iMac 333 160/6G How you like d'em apples?! |

Exactly. Btw, mac-man6, you are correct with th at. However, you need to make sure the Mac can support the consumer version of Mac OS that you are going to use. For example, y ou couldn't put System 7.1 server on a PowerMac 7200, just as you couldn't load Mac OS 8.5 server on your original LC. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
