I just missed posting here,

What is it about a Quadra thats so damn attractive?

It is bizzare, I surf ebay & just pass over virtually all macs except the Quadra's.

Now what is the difference between a Centris & a Quadra?

IIRC....
Basically, a Centris is a lower priced Quadra with fewer features. It was the model in between the LC/Performa line and the Quadra's. They normally came with less RAM, smaller hard drives and FPU's were optional. It's believed that the name Centris was chosen because the stem of the word is Centre, which would fit for Apple's midrange offering. Nowadays, the only difference between Quadra's and their Centris or LC/Performa counterparts is a jumper on the mobo, some small case modifications and the labeling on the front bezel. With upgrades for these machines available relatively cheap, there's really no sense to pay the extra for a Quadra (unless you just like the way the name looks on the bezel). If you change the jumper, it'll report itself as a Quadra (I've done this with an LC 475). Picking up a Centris without an FPU, with minimal RAM and HD and upgrading it can save you quite a bit, if you've got the stuff around.

Thanks for the reply, now where is the jumper located?

Is the jumper the same as on a hard drive?

On a Q605/LC475 the jumper is located on the motherboard, just next to the PRAM battery

Or you want a real computer, like a Quadra 950. It does go a bit beyond the front bezel and a jumper, since neither one can change a 68LC040 into a full 68040.

The Centris was the middle (center) of the line computer and was not longlived (from sales aspect of course).

About 8 months after the introduction, C610 (20Mhz 68LC040) was replaced by Q610 (25Mhz 68040) and C650 (25Mhz 68040) was replaced by Q650 (33Mhz 68040).

Besides the CPU upgrades, there is also some cosmetic differences regarding the floppy insert slot.

C660AV and Q660 both got the 25 Mhz 68040 and are practically the same machines.
However, the C660AV comes with a caddy loaded CD and the
Q660AV got a tray loaded CD.

The original question was:
"What is it about a Quadra that's so (beep) attractive?"

Well, it's all about the 68040 CPU wich makes it the fastest 68k Macs with Q840AV as the top of the line.

For a long time, to own a Quadra was just a dream.
I still dream about the Q605 and Q900, still missing in my collection.

IFAIK, you would also want to get the:
Quadra 630
Quadra 700
Quadra 900
Quadra 950

And I never heard of the 860AV (sounds like an 840AV with the mythical 68060 CPU?!).

Cheers,

Well, to a complete list you have to add the Quadra 610 DOS, one of the most rare Macs actually.

the "DOS" means just that, that it has a card with a 486 processor and dedicated RAM and circuitry for it that allows it to run Windows/DOS alongside the Mac OS.

I use a DOS card from a Power Mac 6100 in my Quadra 650. Quite nifty.

I saw a complete 6100 dos card for like $10 somewhere and was going to buy it "because" but I din't think I'dve used it :( to think maybe the 840av would still be alive today... had it not been for whatever I did to it...
