I never got to make a thread about my first day at the Linux Administration class I'm taking at the local community college because of the worm issue since Friday night. Well, it rocked...I'm so glad I'm taking it. Even in the first day I learned all kinds of basic Unix commands that work right in OSX's Terminal! It's so cool...

In the class, we're specifically dealing with Red Hat 8.0 on Intel hardware, simply because this is by and large the most common iteration of the Linux experience, however it's a very open environment and we're encouraged to bring in our own machines. So, I'm going to bring in my TiBook and install Red Hat 8.0 in VPC 6.

If anybody else out there is still a newbie and wants to learn as much as possible about Unix/Linux, I recommend finding a class in your locale!

Oh, forgot to mention: when we did the history of Unix/Linux, there were several mentions of OS 10.x coming from BSD and I learned that there's two other Mac-users in the class, both of whom are using Jaguar. Also, the teacher of the class, besides being very passionate about Linux, holds a very sardonic view of Microsoft, and mentioned them only to show how much more efficient the Linux wasmovement was.

Hey that sounds cool cine! Something like that would probably help me alot with this whole OS X server thing, except that my head is aboot to explode as is, heh. Half the regular unix commands are so freaked up in OS X (this is version 1.1 mind you..), its impossible to look anything up. That and it is just plain outdated software.

So overall I hope your experience turns out much better and more rewarding!

The teacher would like that, he mentioned that he's never actually used Debian himself. He's used Mandrake, SuSE, and most of other big ones, though.

I wouldn't mind learning nix administration (or installation for that matter!) but as it is, I'm thinking that maybe I'd like to be AppleCare Certified, (PowerBooks first, of course)
or... if you are a member of the apple consultant's network, you get OSX and OSX server for FREEEEEEEeeeeeeEEEEE!!!!!

and can be a member of the "demo hardware pool"
I wondr if there's an "older hardware for free pool"
