Hello,

Sometime about 1986, I bought a MAC SE. I believe it was a 30, but because I travelled a lot, I did not get it with the hard drive. Instead, I had them put in a second floppy. Ran from floppies; OS was somewhere around 4 or 5(?) Worked fine. Put it into storage two years later. About 1996(?), I took it out of storage, put in a small hard drive.

It ran OK for a short while, then stopped. I was told then by a MAC technician that I needed to put OS 7.0.2(?) onto the hard drive so it would boot reliably.

I could not get disks, so I put the SE away again.

Now, I want to try to revive the machine once again.

Can anyone help me locate the proper OS version?

Thanks,
-John

You can download System 6.0.x here. It is available as 800k and 1.4mb versions of 6.0.8, which is probably the best OS to retry your SE with.

You can also get more more info about System 6 at System 6 Heaven.

What do you mean when you say it "stopped" working? If it dies (i.e. no power) then you have a hardware issue...if you just are locked up, you've got a software issue (or a bad hard drive). Drop me a line offlist and I'll get you some boot disks to try.
