Thanks to Gothikon, the LC III has been upgraded with a FPU and an LC/PDS Ethernet card. Definitely not a screamer, but it should be enough to get the job done. With an 80 Mb hard drive, there should be plenty of space for e-Mail! It will be running 7.5.5 once I fix the startup crash (Corrupt System file) and EIMS 3.0 with 20M RAM. If anyone thinks of a better setup than this, you're welcome to provide any input.I was also thinking about disconnecting the cooling fan somehow to avoid dust buildup, but I'm not sure of what other modifications would be necessary. The PSU is really tiny and I'm afraid it would overheat. Now all I need is a full time connection to the Internet. i tried as many 68k email apps that i could find and stalker was, by far, the best. It had great protection against spammers using it (open server or something like that was the term, forgot it at the moment)multi hosting (for more than one domain), low system requirements. It can be turned into an extension and administered via web browser so after you set it up the first time you can run it headless. which makes the lc III a very small server. mine is a 476, btw. anyway, that's my opinion with email servers. http://www.stalker.com/SIMS/ 80 meg should be fine, mine is 250 and i've never had a problem, if you have more than one regualar user, you might want a litle more, i'm not totally sure. I've had mine on for a few months without a restart. I've sorta forgotten when the last time it was that i restarted. i think it has 12 meg of ram. _______________________ Sgt. Thanks.I was just going to use it for my own personal account, so 80 Mb should be fine. I don't know about that "anit-spamming" feature, though. I was thinking about letting people use it to relay messages for "anonymous" e-Mailing. you want that?! ok, you're server will get swamped. REALLY swamped. if that's the case, then EIMS works great! (or sucks, if you don't want the open RELAY!! i just remembered what it was called!) good luck and if i find spam from your ip, i'm coming after you _______________________ Sgt. heh I run an email server, and it is a bitch if you have an open relay, it finally got to a point where my company's server was blacklisted, and Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL would not accept emails repayed thru the server. advise: lock it up like a microwave oven.CCC Lieutennant Commander (Pronounced Leftennant) 68k Macs Rescued: 2 Pluses, a 512KE, a Classic II, a Q650, a Q660AV, and a MacII Contraband rescued: Power Computing PowerBase 200, a PM 8600/300, and a PM8500/180 Apple //s rescued: Apple //e |

hmm. In that case, it doesn't sound so good. I don't know. Maybe I'll give it a try and if it gets swamped, then I'll just get rid of it. Thanks for all the tips! |

Hmm...LC III mail server. That's an idea. I've still got the LC III that I snagged just before it was pitched sitting here on my desk looking useless. I can't take it home until I have a use (in writing) for it. (My S.O.'s idea to prevent "junk" buildup)I have a full-time 'net connection (1.5 Mbps ADSL), but can't get a static IP and don't have a domain name registered. How exactly would I set that up to send/recieve mail...what would the address be? Is there a site out there that might provide some complete details on how to accomplish this? Thanks in advance for the info! -Chad

The best dynamis DNS service provider is DynDNS.org. You just go there and sign up for the Members NIC. Then you download a program that monitors your IP's state and updates the changes to DynDNS.org when it changes. The Lightning Stalker 68k Macs liberated so far: Cat Piss Performa 631CD ThriftMac LC III PPC Macs: Road Apple 5200CD Performa 6400/180 PowerMac 7600/120 (225 Mhz upgrade) Lady Smith Apples: Apple IIc (5.25" Built-in Floppy) 2 Apple IIe |
