I've been trying to fix my very first computer, a Macintosh Performa 410. The problem I'm having with it is that the floppy drive seems to be shot. I put a new(well used but working) one in and it didn't work. Afterwards the new drive had the burnt electrical smell to it and wouldn't even work in the machine that donated the drive. Stupidly I tried another drive that suffered the same fate. Does any one know what could be wrong with the old Mac to make it burn up floppy drives. It is a perfectly good computer, it just doesn't have a floppy drive. Also, is is there any way to get a Performa 410 on a regular LAN(ethernet, DCHP)? Any help would be appreciated.A computer without a Microsoft operating system is like a dog without bricks tied to its head. |

I believe, that I can help you with your LANtastic issues, I don't quite remember the performa models, but your should run system 7.3.x if you have 4 or more MB of RAM (I think it'll work with 2 even) system 7.5 and above came with a control panel called TCP/IP, this willl let you run with DHCP, you can probably run this control panel on system 7.1, not sure about before that though.Official 68k videographer |

i have one of those (actually, an LCII which is the same thing). i dunno about the floppy issue... if it keeps burning out your drives, i dont know that there's any hope. about the LAN, you need a LC PDS ethernet card, which can be had on ebay for cheap. some PDS cards have an extended connector. you can't use those. but i havent seen any ethernet ones that make use of them, so you should be all set with anything you get.) like cory said, if you have system 7.5.3 installed (which you can download from apple here[http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.5_Version_7.5.3/]) you can use dhcp easily. i'm not sure about previous versions of the OS ( it can run system 6 through 7.5.5 i believe).-- 3 Mac SEs, 1 Classic II, 1 LC, 1 LCIII, 1 Quadra 610, 1 Performa 630, 1 Quadra 630, 1 Performa 6200, 1 iMac DV 400 |
