The Quintessential, Ultra-Coveted PowerBook 550c!

This is the first one I've ever seen show up on eBay, and it's almost worth it for the $550 buy it now price. Only the hinge is bad and so is the hard drive. Of course, I have a wokring 500 megger I could pop in there. Wow...

whoa!

To me, it's coveted because i consider it the best 68k PowerBook - not just because its particularly rare.

However, people might collect something like the Macintosh TV (which was poop under the cover, save the TV tuner) because there were only 10,000 made

Hey, you don't have to consider anything, it IS the best 68k PowerBook, hands down. Matter of fact, I'd go sar far as to say it's the best 68k Mac there is. I mean c'mon, it's like a portable Quadra 950!

Honestly, if I had $550 to throw around, I would get it. A few years ago 540c's sold for that much!

Was it different from the Q630 parts? I didn't think 10k TV's ever shipped.

"poop" is way to flattering for that...

I posted about that same eBay auction 3 days ago, and now you take the credit! Ahhh!

Sorry Cap'n! I actually found the auction through a post on the AppleFritter Forums, so I don't mean to take credit for it either way. I usually do a search for "550c" on ebay every so often, though.

I don't see what is so great about the 550c. You could get the same 33 Mhz 040 processor in a Duo 280c, and it weighs 2 pounds less.

No no, the 33MHz 040 in the 550c has a full FPU, and is the only 68k PowerBook that has such. Also, the screen is 10.4", the biggest of any 68k 'book. What these two differences mean is that you can actually do fairly robust multi-media work on the go.

Wow...again, if I had $400 to spare, I would have bought it and refurbished it. That would be the crown jewel to any 68k collection...

Okay, you got me. If I had $400 to spare I would have already spent it on a 400 MHz G4 card and a new SCSI CD-RW for my 7500.
