I'm a college student working part-time at a local High-School District in the IT department, and I just saved a Macintosh Centris 650 from the dumpster, also go a farallon attactment for RJ-45 Ethernet. I see there are a few PPC upgrades on E-Bay going to bid on them and probably upgrade it. Other than that, what am I campable of doing with this computer?

http://www.lowendmac.com/quadra/c650.shtml is a good link for checking out te specs.

IMO a lot of the PPC upgrades for olders/68k Macs aren't really worth it. Why have a rubbish PPC when you can have a good 68k Mac? This is especially true when for the price of most of these upgrades you could buy a better computer anyway.

Unless you really want to try and play MP3's on it or use PM software I wouldn't bother. If you don't have the FPU I'd certainly buy a chip with an FPU as this is a much cheaper and worthwhile upgrade.

I suppose the only PPC upgrade you might want to consider is a 7100 mobo swap.

Anyway the 650 isn't a bad machine, i don't know how new you are to Macs but you should be able to play the Marthon games on it which are outstanding. You can get it on the internet, as you are posting I assume you have another machine that can connect to the internet. You could set up some internet sharing software and hook them up with an ethernet crossover cable. you could set it up as small server just for starters.

Actually I'm not new at all grew up with Apple //c's and //e's my first Macintosh I got was in 1991 which was a IIci, 2nd Macintosh Performa 6400/200, 3rd Macintosh G3/266 DT, 4th Macintosh G4/400. I sold off the 6400 when I got the G3. However I still have the IIci, the G3/266, and the G4. Since I started work I've aquired a Powerbook 160 and now this Centris, I figured I could find some use for them rather than seeing them go into the Garbage, especially since they were still in working order. All I really want the PPC chip for is being able to run PPC applications such as Claris Works 4.5 (I only have the PPC, can't find the 68k version) and to play classic PPC and 68k games such as Dark Forces and Descent. If I need to play a state of the art game I'll just hop on to the G3 or G4, or even god forbid my PeeCee P4 1.8ghz...

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN DESCENT ON AN EARLY PPC! Even on my 6100, Descent runs so slow it's not worth playing. You need at least a fast 603 or a 604 to run it well. My 6400 runs Descent 1 and 2 very well, even without pixel doubling. There are Voodoo and OpenGL versions of Descent 1 and 2 with InputSprocket support that you could use on your G3 or G4. Dark Forces should run all right on a 68k. Early versions of ClarisWorks are available on Hotline. See http://www.tracker-tracker.com/

You can run A/UX (Apple UNIX) on it and use it as a server or workstation, if it has a 68040 chip with an FPU.

I guess I'll just stick to Lemmings, Dark Forces, Indy Atlantis, and other older games then, still having the option to be able to run in 68k mode and PPC mode for 21 bucks seems worth it to me, I mean this machine is only going to be for simple tasks, I figure I can even give it to my mom if I get tired of it, I have a feeling this box would work very well for someone like her knowing very little about how to work computers.

For $21 you can get a PPC Mac that will be much better. There are so many bottlenecks with PPC upgrade cards in 68k Macs that they often feel slower than they would without the card.

Pretty much any PowerMac will run 68k code at acceptable speed, so you don't need to worry about it.

an early PPC will run 68k apps at native speed or very near it wit ha copy of connectix speed doubler installed on it.
dont get me wrong (I have a Q650, the C650's twin , seperated at birth, and love it to death) but I think that a PPC native machine would be best for you, something in the way of a 7100 or an 8100. Give the 650 to your mom after you set it up for dial up internet access, and install some mom-specific applications on it.

anyway, just my 350-some-odd thousand turkish lira (which last time I cheched is very close to $0.02)
