I've always just used plumber's putty instead. It does the job, and it's not as messy.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700 (2), LC 575, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

The only time I've come across it was when I pulled apart an LC PSU and turned it into a pencilcase. You should have seen the exam instructors asking me to open it up, maybe they thought that it was a bomb. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I have a PEESEE friend... he thinks that heat sinks won't work without the stuff... and... that is wrong... the Acer's heat sink... had this little heat absorbing pad... but not any messy goo... and... well other than that I haven't taken off many hear sinks... both of my dells have had goo... and a few other pentium class machineswhat I'm interested in... is if you need goo when you've underclocked... there's a P90 processor that I underclocked to 75... I never really got to look at it or see what it was doing... Official 68k videographer |

The general rule, or at least the one I was taught, is a heatsink on any Wintel processor over 50mhz, and a fan over 150mhz. Thermal paste, although nasty to deal with, is a necessary evil when considering the damage that can be done by not having proper protection. ------------------ MacMoose Benevolent Genius, 68k MLA Total 68K Macs liberated: 22 and counting ------------------

Well, no, you can have a heat sink on a X86 processor if it's properly designed and the case has superb venting. My PPro 200 had a heat sink and no fan. Thermal paste can make a difference in cooling. It conducts heat better than the microscopic gaps of air. And this can make a substantial difference in some cases. I noticed one before and after the tiny dab of Arctic Silver between the golden orb and my PIII 750. 10 degrees cooler. But, yes, it is EVIL. --- 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |
