Anybody have any idea on the feasability of putting a powermac 9500 mobo into a Quadra 840av case?

Seems doubtful because the 9500 is much bigger than the 840. The 9500 is 43 cm tall and has 6 slots, whilst the 840 AV is only 36 cm tall and has only 3 slots. Might work to put the 840AV mobo in the 9500 if you can hack out the port holes as needed.

Good luck dremelling,

I think you are going to have to grin and bare it As far as I know the 8100 board is the best thing that will fit in there. Using the word best may not be accurate though. I would leave the 840 AV the way it is and go have a good hard look at those 7x00 cases (not 7100's). The 7x00 cases can accomodate quite a few different boards. Most are pretty simillar but you can fit a G3 board in there at a later date. The 7x00 case although not exciting certainly isn't offensive to look at. I really like the 9600/8600 case myself.

It'll take a 8100 or 8500 motherboard; those were official Apple upgrade paths.

But why waste a Quadra 840AV? I can see it would be a valid upgrade for a Quadra 800, but an AV? Already a very nice machine in and of itself.

No, you mis-understand.

I saw a 9500 mobo on ebay.

I have a working 840av & a dead 840av. S in effect I have a spare casing & am looking for a mobo to fill it, another 840av would be fine if one turns up, otherwise what else will fit in it?

If as someone else said you can in fact fit an 8500 board I would say go for it. I think it;s the only thing that will make you happy

The 8500 is aproximately 8 billion times better than the 8100 and has a reasonable upgrade path. And it is quite obvious you would rather have the 840 case over any other. I think these go for around 40 USD on eBay and most people, even if they say they won't, will ship internationally as long as you make it clear that you will pay for it. However the 840 case is still pretty difficult to get in to.

One other though is that if the 8500 board fits I'm 99% certain the 7500 board will fit. If someone can confirm this I have an unused 7500 board and 120 MHz chip which you could have for 30 UKP I could probably through in 16 Mb of RAM but that would arrive at a later date, it's not much but it would make the thing useable. Even though I;m in Aus these are at my parents house in the Scottish borders they could post it.

EDIT - OK this link seems to confirm that an 8500 board will fit www.abc.it/Apple/Product_Info/PowerMacintosh/ PowerMacUpgrades.pdf
I know I've seen people put 8500 boards in 7500 cases so the reverse must be possible. Once again if someone can confirm it.

The 7500 and 8500 mobos are definitely cross-interchangeable (although this klutz found that extracting the AV daughterboard is major agro). I know because I did just such a "brain" transplant to create my 8575G3 and 7585e Frankenmacs. Personally, I like the 8500 mobo because it has video output and input so it can use a regular TV as the monitor and can digitize video. The 7500 only has video input. Either are great though, because you can upgrade the processor (I have a 250 MHz G3 in the 8575G3). A 250 MHz G3 is easily 2-3 times as fast as the stock 120 MHz 604 chip that was in the old 8500.

Happy brain surgery,

You must have had an 8500 AV? I thought both the 7500 and 8500 boards were available with and without the AV personality card. So it seems there really is no difference between the 7500 and 8500.

Anyway you interested in a deal Shakti? I'll check out the exact details of what I have as I bought it for a project just before coming over to Aus but never even had time to unwrap the parcel. There was a logic board, CPU and some cables which you probably don't need as they will already be in your 840 case.

That's including postage (which wouldn't be very much anyway and about 20 UKP less than a whole computer!)

The things sitting there doing nothing at all and I have no plans on using it mself now. If you're not ready for it now just let me know when you are.

Hope you had a good Christmas, I'm flat broke too after buying my g/f a new palm!
