and it's ALOT more than what the iBooks can do! here's a basic list of what we need to be about equal to what apple gives us 20 - PowerBook 520C (have to give some path for upgrade...) 1 - 24 port ethernet hub 20 - whatever is needed for ethernet with the PowerBook (cards, transcievers... ect ect) 20 - 50' ethernet cables (one for each PowerBook) 1 - 100' ethernet cable (always connected to the rest of the network!) but my Real plan has ALOT more! 25 - PowerBook 520 C, each with that card and the 50" ethernet cable 1 - Q800, is a server that is local to the PowerBooks, stores files, routes things and is in general "useful" 1 - Q840AV, this does some multimedia presentations, allows for a centralized viewing area... of anything 1 - AudioVision 14" monitor, OR 15" multiscan monitor AV (of course I need a cool monitor!) 1 - Some Apple Laser Printer (help me decide which one would be best for a mobile lab) The idea behing the real plan is that the books and such can be used anywhere... in a corperate meeting, the agenda and main ideas could be on the big screen, in a class, a movie could be showing, or when the class goes portable with the whole setup... they could recieve instructions individually via the big screen, or over the network on their own screen things like a chat program and other stuff are just about a requirement... - other things that are nice: Quicktake 200 camera Apple VideoCamera Kit Plaintalk Microphone(s) AppleDesign Speakers better PowerBooks more PowerBooks longer cords upgrade server to Q950 or AWGS950 (depending on needs of user) upgrade the whole shebang to PowerPC (different generations available) With the VideoCamera kit thing... (which hooks into Svidio) a class can videoconferenct with other classes... across the hall... across the globe... and can even individually text chat, and/or send files on the PowerBooks ------ How does it sound? I know it's long winded and I'll be putting it in a better form on my own website... but does it sound feasable? I might want to end up putting something like this together when I move... I mean... I already have the supercool monitor ;)Official 68k videographer |

well, it sounds like a major bitch to set up, and a backbreaker to lug around. I am a veteran of many-a-mobile lab (the school I work at has 6 of them, three of iClams, one of iChicklets, one of Dells, and one of ThinkPads) and they are a pain to set up without having to unspool ethernet, or things like that the school is wired, so we plug three AirPort base stations into the strip, and a new MarkNet into the existing classroom printer, and everything prints alright. The only thing that we need now is carts that stand up to being dragged over rough sidewalks, and are big enough so that we do not have to carry two carts per classroom, which gets to be a bitch when you have three people pushing two carts with bent wheels uphill for four blocks thankfully, we do not have to take a server! anyway, this is my thought on the matter, bottom line if you are going to use a mobile lab of 5x0s, get the card cage and put a wavelan card in. remember that students are stupid, and it takes 15 minutes to teach them to log in, so ethernet cables are not practical, it takes too much time to get them all untangled and connected to students computers. if you have 55 minute classroom periods, the students would get about 10 minutes of work done by the time everything was set up.ok, I'll shut up now CCC Lieutennant Commander (Pronounced Leftennant) 68k Macs Rescued: 2 Pluses, a 512KE, a Classic II, a Q650, a Q660AV, and a MacII Contraband rescued: Power Computing PowerBase 200, a PM 8600/300, and a PM8500/180 Apple //s rescued: Apple //e |

here's what i don't get about classroom labs:... My comp2 class this semester was in the graphics art building of my community college (one of the largest in the nation) and i'm surrounded by shiny new macs in all the labs except for the one that my class is in which had a black dell at every seat. The thing zipped along fine, but ran win98. My problem is that EVERYTIME i sat down, the ass in the class before had to mess up every setting in windows and word that he/she could do and it always too me 10 minutes just to get it working well enough. My teacher who, was a die-hard pc user. I have never heard such unholy rants against macs than what this lady could spill out (most of them about 10-15 years outdated, but she was fun to listen to). Anyway, she blaims the network in the room on the fact that SO many people use the machines that it would be impossible to keep them free of garbage. Of course, i laughed at that, and kept my words to myself. Why are they using win98, why are pc users so naive and ingnorant, and why do people use NOVELL for networking, what's the matter with tcp/ip? Whew... i got that out. I'm going back to my civ 2 game, I pulled that out for the 5300c and i'm hooked AGAIN!!! my life and sleep is dissappearing again. _______________________ Sgt. ok... I might use PB190s also... they have the PCMCIA slots... and every school (high school and elementary) has had pretty good facilities for rolling carts... they always had carts with LaserDisc, VCR, PM6100 and misc. junk on them rolling around...i guess with the wireless things... i don't need to wheel a server around with the portable machines.... and I *guess* that you can get the pack without a multimedia machine also ;) now just to find out: prices of original things... a cart to use if I can make my own cart how to use those WaveLAN cards.... anything else? it's not as slow as installing MacOS 7.6 over ethernet.. but at localtalk speeds... 7.6 is HUGEr than BSD iThink... and I could "clock down" the transfers over ASIP hehehehthe PB540s have floppy drives right??? I know how I'm going to install OS8.1 on all of them! I'll do it over the wired network (whilst still in a "main lab") with boot floppys... in the Q840Av with the lab.. I'm puting 2 big vid cards... and i'll have super widescreen! it's going to be 2 LCDs hacked together and controlled in unison by the 2 cards... the third NuBus slot... I'll make a wireless adaptor for it... (or I'll only put wireless into the server Q800) that 3rd slot.... iThink that ML5 would want it to have a jackhammer SCSI card... or some kind of multimedia thing... so i'll leave it empty Official 68k videographer |

Yeah, like the Novell 6 downgrade that my old school did, or the hidden BootAtRandom™ feature that will randomly boot me off the internet unless i log off for at least 1 hour, sometimes more, for no reason, at which point i go to the IS department, and receive no help from admin other than "We don't support Apples". -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
