Use 'em to increase the length of a phone cable! Thats how i'm typing this right now. Here's what you do:

1. Take one piece of RJ-11 cable and one PhoneNet connector, and use it to plug the PhoneNet connector into the phone line.

2. Take another piece of RJ-11 cable, and plug one end into the other jack on the PhoneNet connector, and the other end into your telephone/modem/fax machine/answering machine/whatever.

Don't worry about the serial cable. Its not needed in this configuration, and can just sit there not plugged into anything. If you want, you can just keep daisy chaining PhoneNet connectors until you have the length cable that you want. Either way, the setup works extremely well, just like a really long RJ-11 cable, but isn't as expensive as one.

I'd say that it's be *more* expensive than a really long RJ-11 cable... if you make them yourself! 4 core flat cable is 70c/meter and RJ-11 plugs are 40c each. Most electronics stores will lenf you a crimping tool, and the best ones will even do it for you for free.

But that is a good tip, even if it is a bit rough!

Good thinking, but if someone already has a mile of PhoneNet connectors and the accompanying pieces of RJ-11 cable, this would work out cheaper, as then they wouldn't have to spend anything.

Same here. NOt only that though, they were cheaper than ethernet, because they used a bus topology instead of star, so you didn't have to buy a stupid hub!
