I am considering purchasing a 6100/AV machine, it is selling at 50 dollars Canadian, which even for a low-end PPC seems cheap enough, and the added touch is that it has AV Ports.

Since SCSI drives seem so expensive, I would like to simply hook the 6100 to my network using dave or some other utility. I want to mount a network drive to use for video capture. But, I am sure that the current ethernet speeds built into the 6100 will not be fast enough to write raw Quicktime video via the network.

Is it possible to install another ethernet card into the 6100 that will give the extra speed required? I am unsure of the terms but I belive the 6100 has only 10Base not 100Base Ethernet, hence a speed hit.

Will it be worth trying to find a card for this old of a mac or should i try something else?

I like the idea of having one machine doing video capture while I can work on my others doing other tasks without bothering it.

Any suggestions on the dilemna? Thanks.

The 6100's ethernet is theoretically limited to 10bT, or 10Mbps, which translates to only 1.5 MBps as a top speed. Real-world you're going to get half a Megabyte a second transfer over it, which is not enough for writing high-quality video. 2-3MB/sec is the minimum for video data transfer, and you could probably acheive that and better if you were to source a 10/100 Nubus ethernet card, though they tend to go for $35-$50 on eBay (though one of our soldiers has a stash of FOUR of them!).

the catch-22???
you need to fill that nuBus slot the AV card is in with the 10/100 ethernet if you want to have that fast ethernet... other than that I'd just get like... a 700 or so MB HDD if you don't really need toostore TOO MUCH video on the HD at any one time
