Okay, so I'm over at the 'Daily Chicken' yesterday, having lunch (their fries are heaven on a plate!), and afterwards, I can't help but have a peek into the Goodwill (Place of Boundless Treasures!) next door. Some of you might remember that this is the same Goodwill from whence came the (im)famous $35 iMac...
Anyway, I have a peek around, but nothing really great catches my eye... Just the usual thrift-store crap. As I'm getting ready to leave, I head back to the counter, to reclaim my backpack (they ask that you take them off when shopping), and I'm waiting in line to get the bag back, when I peek behind the counter (where they sometimes store the really good stuff), hoping to see more Intellivision games. The last time I was here, a few weeks back, I was able to pick up 6 or 7, mint, in-the-box Intellivision games, with all manuals and inserts, for only a few bucks. You see, when I'm not trying to rescue Mac's from sad fates, I'm also something of a classic videogame collector. I've got about 20 'vintage' game systems, from the Intellivision, to VirtualBoy, to a great Vectrex, TurboGrafx-16, and so on. The one area I've not really explored was the whole Atari thing... I just never really got into Atari collecting. Anyway, back to the story...
So, when I peek behind the counter, just as I was about to turn away, I notice a white box, kinda jammed under a shelf. I wouldn't have paid any attention to the box, had I not noticed that, written on the side in black marker, was something unintelligable, followed by the word 'games'. Of course, this piqued my interest, so when I had a chance, I flagged down one of the girls who works there whom I'm sorta pals with. I ask her about the box, and she gives me a big smile and says, 'Hey, I was hoping you'd see this!'. She gets the box, opens it, and inside is a near-mint Atari 2600/VCS (aka 'oldskool Atari'), with about 25 games! Sweeeeet! I start hunting around for a price tag, and when I find it, my heart sinks. They want $75 for it, which is waaaaay outta my price range. Sadly, I tell her that it's a little rich for my blood, and I'll have to pass... <sob>. Just then, the store manager walks by, and my pal says 'stay right here' and goes into a huddle with the manager. After a long moment, the manager comes over to me and says, 'Hey, you're the guy who bought all those old games a while back (meaning the Intellivision stuff)- you come in here all the time! You want this old Atari? How 'bout $30? Take it or leave it!" After a moments thought, I couldn't pass up such a great deal (and kind offer!), so I snagged the whole setup! Man, I was walking on air!
Here's what I got:

Atari 2600 base unit
Two joysticks (one has trouble going 'left', but I think I can fix it)
Two paddles (they both have the imfamous 'Atari-jitters', but again, I should be able to easily fix or replace them)
All power and video hook-ups
And best of all, 24 game carts!
BattleZone
Centipede
Midnight Magic (awesome pinball game!)
Galaxian
Realsports Baseball and Vollyball
Missile Command (one of my favs!)
DigDug
Basketball (classic, even if just for the hiliarious animations!)
Skiing
Space Invaders (another all-time favorite!)
Warlords
Crystal Castles
Crossbow
Venture
Moon Patrol (rather simple, but fun!)
Joust (ahh Joust, my old nemesis...)
Pac-Man (crappy version - look at those ghosts flicker!)
Defender II (this just kicks loads of ass!)
Dark Chambers
Kangaroo
Super Breakout (needs working paddles to try. Didn't Steve Jobs write this?)
Asteroids
and
Q*Bert!

Man, I'm psyched. I'm on the verge of skipping class to play...
<Captin Kirk> must.... resist..... overpowering.... arrgh!... </Captain Kirk>

As usual, forgive me for bragging, but I just wanted to share this story with some folks who can appreciate it!
Thanks for enduring this post,
SpaceBoy
PS Oh, and if you're wondering how the hell this counts as a liberation, then remember that the Atari 2600 is based around the same 6502 CPU that the Apple II's used.... which sorta makes it a cousin to Apple's, right? Right?

Sweet find! I have two old 2600's and about forty games. My kids like it better than the PSOne. I picked up my second 2600 at Goodwill also. It came with all the hookups, about 20 games, and also had an Atari game on Datasette, and the box that holds the games that sits under the console.

P.S. I think Woz wrote the original "Breakout", and Jobs was the one that sold it to Atari.

That's not a nutritionally complete lunch. (I'm hooked on their gyros, the chicken -- hell, it all tastes good!)

I'd take my TI-99/4A anyday, over an Atari 2600 VCS :)

Anyhow, you might want to take a gander at www.AtariAge.com SpaceBoy. They have tons of info on lots of stuff about the Atari systems, including troubleshooting, repair, history, all the pirate games types, and lots of other good stuff (including ROMs, but you don't get the full effect, that way, do you?).

Just thought I'd plug that.

/me goes to play Contra on his top-loading NES.

I learned BASIC on one of those! Not a bad machine, really. Too bad I only had the finance management cartridge.

Still, I like my TRS-80 better.

I'm giving my vintage Intellivision with 5 games to my brother for Christmas. I still have an Atari 7800 with one game, though!

that's no nintendo... that's a FAMICOM!! japanese nintendo. short for famaly computer. personally, I still think the jaguar should have kicked the N64's @$$ (the FIRST 64-bit video game system ever created (by atari no less...), and at it's heart, a 68000... hehhehe! we SHOULD have an atari section! it's 68k! and before you go spazzing at me all like "the '000 wasn't 64-bit" it's graphic capabilities are 64-bit, not main processing datapath)

ho humm... oh well. I never seem to find anything good. my day might come... yeah. a week from never.

That is true, Woz did in fact write the game, it's in this book I got as a gift from my Dad's friend on the history of Apple.

Heya SpaceBoy! Good Haul!

As I mention on my page of The Mothership - I'm a gamer too! Your story caught my eye, as I collect vintage video game systems as well. I'm kinda partial to systems in the original box, and have been looking for an Atari CX2600 (the woodgrain model) myself. I know of one locally that is SuperMintyFresh in the box, and the guy wants $75.00 for it too. Too much for me as well.

Enjoy!
