So I recently acquired a 6500/275 with 4GB HD / 128MB RAM/CD What OS would you recoment to have on it. I'll get it with OS8.5 installed on it. I was thinking OS8.6.1 but any advice is appreciated. Also is the upgrade from 8.5 to 8.6.1 free or will I have to pay for it. Also what kind of Internet browser would you recomend for it? Is there something else cool I might add to it? Eventually this computer will substitute the LCIII I have given to me sister and little niece. They don't really need anyhting powerful and that why I went with that particular machine and not some fancy (AKA more expensive) G3. They basically need some word processing capabilities, some drawing capabilities and kids software. Any suggestions? Also what should I do with the LCIII which is to be retired from it's current job? Could I use it as a terminal for my G4? (through some ssh utilitie maybe?) later, petikas |

Nice acquisition! I've got a PM 6400/180 with Mac 16" Color Display (Trinitron) and I run 8.6.1 on it and it does pretty well. I think 8.6.1 is worth the download from Apple- its an update and it will run smartly on that machine. I use MS Internet Explorer 4.0 on mine, I've used 5.0 but I think 4.0 is a little faster on my machine. You could probably run IE 5.0 without a hitch. I'd also max out the RAM if its not already done. A little tip to make IE run faster- create a RAM disk (memory control panel) on your desktop and put your browser cache in there and your cache gets emptied every time you shut down your computer. Here is that link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60283 I hope that helps! Macs Liberated: 9 - 6400/180 (main Mac), 660AV, 636CD, LCIII+, LCII (2), Classic II, Classic and SE. RAM for those things are expensive!!!! That's why I don't have it maxed out... I was looking at $240 from an authorized apple retailer and in the mid to high 100s elsewhere for the two DIMMS... errrr..... I'd love to max my 6400 out tho... It would be quite bennefical to the G3 400 I have in there... 52MB RAM just aint cuttin it.________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

I'd suggest 8.6. The upgrade to 8.6 from 8.5 is free. It's fast and stable on the 6500, and it will run most new programs. Borrow an older iMac restore CD from a friend and copy it off the disk image on the CD. IE 5 works well for the Internet browser. Try Linux on it. YDL works well on the 6500, and X performs nicely with the 6500's accelerated video. Woohoo!! I am currently posting this from my 6500/275 I upgraded the system to 8.6 but i can't seem to be able to find 8.6.1 anywhere. Any ideas? The TV tuner on this machine works perfectly, it's actually a lot better that I imagine it would be. Later I will also try the Video in/out cards and see how that goes. The best thing of all is that the monitor I have supports two vga inouts so both the G4 and the 6500 are currently connected on the same monitor and I can switch back and forth. :D I think at 128MB the RAM is maxed out and the hard disk is decent enough at 4GB. A very good buy I'd say. The 6500/275 with keyboard and mouse, vga cable and DB15/HD15 adapter and apple remote all together didn't cost me more than $150 and shipping is included. I should also mention that the TV tuner was given to me free from a person over at MacAddict forums who found them in his closet and didn't want them. Thank you stranger! A problem though is that the installed Quicktime was version 3 so I upgraded to 6 from the Apple site but I think 6 is a bit overkill for this machine. Some movies have jerky playback and quicktime in explorer shows only few frames and sound the rest of the frames are dropped. Do you think that the problem lies with quictime or explorer. In other words should I upgrade explorer to 5 or downgrade quicktime to 5 or maybe 4? Where can I find earlier version of quicktime? thanks for the patience, petikas

I think 128 Mb is the max RAM for a 64/500 although I am selling a total of 6*64 Mb dimms (i also have quite a few smaller DIMMs) if you look in the trade / for sale forum for a lot less than 100 USD each!!I personally would run OS 9.04 or later. 8.5 and 8.6 caused nothing but problems on all the machines I worked on. For a lot of software I see no reason not to run the latest non beta version. It's arguable that some software never really leaves beta though! Especially with web browsers that never have a huge overhead and standards are always changing I would run the latest version when ever possible. I imagine the speed difference between IE 4 and 5 is slim at best anyway. I do love updates though and I've yet to be stung by one(fingers crossed). P.s. Never buy RAM from Apple. I got a quote from them for insurance when I shpped my 9600 from the UK to Aus. Lets just say I would probably have an Xserve if it had been trashed in transit! Their value on the amount of RAM I had would have paid for an iBook on it's own. Interstingly they can't replace internal floppy drives and would have had to get a USB one for me.

The reason you can't find 8.6.1 is that it doesn't exist. If you bought 8.5, you got an upgrade to 8.5.1 and then to 8.6.I've tried OS 9 on my 6400 and it was really unstable. It didn't add any features or compatibility. Stay with 8.6. QuickTime 4 or 5 should work fine. You should be running IE 5. It's much more standards-compliant and stable than previous versions. Do you have the ATI acceleration extensions in the System Folder? If not, that might be one reason for slow video. I use 8.6 on my 6400/180 with 137 mb RAM (maxed out) and it does pretty well. I don't think there is a 8.6.1 out there, if there was I'm sure Apple would have posted it by now. I got my extra RAM from
$17.97 for each 64 Mb DIMM, plus shipping, of course. Don't go to a retailer to buy memory unless you are buying PC100/133 DIMMs, you'll get hosed. My local Mac dealer quoted me $59.99 for a 32 Mb DIMM and $79.99 for a 64 Mb DIMM. I'm sure "offical" memory from Apple would be twice that, so it pays to shop around. A 6400 comes with 8 Mb on the board and you can go from there, up to 137 Mb - that's Apple's system profiler tells me I have.Macs Liberated: 9 - 6400/180 (main Mac), 660AV, 636CD, LCIII+, LCII (2), Classic II, Classic and SE.
