Well, I'm back from visiting the in-laws in LA.As you may recall, I posted in the Lounge a few weeks ago, wondering if any of the SoCal-based comrades ever attend the monthly HamFest/SwapMeet at TRW in Manhattan Beach. I ended up going, so I figured I'd take a minute to describe the Mac pickings and post my own brag. :)
Macs were definately present, but somewhat spotty. A decent number of PCI PowerMacs, including a few Beige G3s ($85-125, depending on vendor). A couple of iMacs and iBooks, but almost no other PowerBooks except for a few 5300s, an equal number of 1400s, a 170, and a couple of Duos. As for 68k Macs, only a couple of vendors seemed to have more than one or two, but at least one of those vendors had tremendous deals:
Plus/SE/Classic Macs for $1 each
LC 5x0 (and a couple of 5200s) for $2 each
LC/LC II/LC III pizza boxes for free
(FYI, the AIOs apparently came from the Mt View school district, as some had the district name embossed on the top.)
As for my own finds, I basically bought myself a Mystic kit. From one of the first vendors to open, I was able to get a Color Classic (10/80) for $5. (The vendor says he priced it so cheap because of the extensive case yellowing- more about that in a moment.) My initial thought was to eventually canibalize my 630, but talking to someone at the fair, I got the idea to go with the more conservative Mystic mod. Fortunately, I was able to talk the guy with the $2 AIO LCs into letting me buy just the motherboard and drives from his most battered one (rear bezel already missing).
As for the yellowing, it is mostly on just the top and front, but apparently there was a cable sitting on top of the case as it yellowed, as the yellowing is a perfect shadow print of the cable connector. My other concern is what seems to be some flickering (blue flashing, really) of the video. I need to keep an eye on this one...
Still, though, I'm psyched.
