Aloha,I found 2 drives, which are labeled: 1) 3.5'' drive from Apple. 2) 800K drive drom Apple. The questions are: A) Can I connect both of these to my IIsi ? B) If I take an internal High Density floppy (1.44 Mb) and put in the external case. Can my SE recognize that it's High Desnsity ? C) Can I boot my SE with external floppy drive ? Apple introduced a number of 3.5" floppy drives for the Apple II and Macintosh computer. I don't remember which is which by name, but I can figure out which one will work from the csa2 faqs if you give me the model numbers. At anyrate, there is at least one model where you can replace the DSDD drive mechanism with a DSHD mechanism. It will allow you to read 1.44MB disks, but only on machines which support it. For the most part, the SE did not support high density disks. There was an upgrade, but you have to replace 2 ROMs and the SWIM (?), so it is not very common. I believe that you can boot the machine from an external drive. (I don't think that the Macintosh distinguishes between the two.) II2II Intelligence officer in training. |

And here are the winning numbers :The ''800K External drive'' model : M0131. The ''Apple 3.5 Drive'' model : A9M0106 hope it helps, of course these are the model numbers, and not the serial no. I guess I will have to pass the SE ROM upgrade, but what about the IIsi ? Can it recognize them ?

1) yes you can connect them to your IIsi2) While you cannot use a 1.44mb floppy disk in those drives (both are 800k drives) if you happen to have a couple of apple 1.44mb drive (SuperDrive) mechanisms laying around, you can swap them out for those 800k drives and all will be hunky dory 3) yes, you can boot from an external floppy, provided it has a valid system folder -------------------- keeper of the website , master of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™, and figure-head of the Peoples' PDS Republic -------------------- |
