Aloha,

I just got this SE and I wondered about a feature that exists on a PeeCee : Network booting.

Sadly, when I turn this SE on, I get the question mark icon, which means no boot disk.

Can I boot this SE from an LC2 or IIsi or whatever 68k Mac ? or do I need the old classic ways of floppy/external/null modem boot ?

I am almost sure the new iMac can boot from network WITHOUT any hard drive, so , is it a new feature ? and if not, from which system can I get this to work ?

Thanx in advance.

There's no network booting to speak of before the bondi era. You can do System Software installs over a network, but that assumes that there's already an OS on the machine.

The only exception (AFAIK) is the //c.

I think you mean the IIgs, as the //c does not do networking.

Usually network booting depends upon the network card. Many cards simply did not support this feature as a cost saving/customer gouging measure. At least that was the case in the PC world and I have been told that it is the same for the Macintosh.

Well, there was that odd mention of the ADB microcontroller flag that jt discovered in the IIsi developer notes...did that lead anywhere? Supposedly there was a control panel that allowed some kind of netbooting. It may not have made it to market...?

I don't believe that the threads on network booting with an LCII or a IIsi actually lead anywhere... while it's a cool concept (especially for those cheap machines that were meant to be bought by the snotloads by schools and corperations)... we haven't gotten it to work

we can't boot over null modem either :(

although... you can probably find the version of Mac system you want at a MLA HL server

hey cats: you have programming experience... i can imagine that all it would take in RealBasic is for you to know more about the hardware... and a unique control panel for each IIsi and LCII....

then we need to know how to implement it on the serverside, what kind of network to use... and then we need to know how to apply this to a help topic about an SE/30

I have a NetBoot Server CD that came with my OS X 1.1 server "collection." If anyone needs access to any apps or coding it may use, just drop me a line as usual.

Probably wouldn't help much with whatever system we'd run on a IIsi (I'd use 7.1). OS X server is, after all, mostly BSD unix

There were actually third party NetBooting solutions, way back in 1985...
