A friend of mine bought a Grape iMac from me.

I transferred all sorts of stuff onto it via a crossover cable connected to my iBook.

BUT, using a known good cable, I can't connect it to the Eastern Michigan University ethernet network, and get it online. It doesn't negotiate a DHCP setup.

The same symptoms appeared on a LAN set up in my girlfriends apartment, which was useing a Linksys router.

I beleived the Ethernet port to be bad, so I swapped out the mobo with one off another iMac I had here at the house.

STILL doesn't work! What's going on? These SAME symptoms appeared in OS 9 and mOS X.

Is there a USB->Ethernet adapter that works with Macs I might be able to use?

If the crossover worked, the port isn't bad.

My daughter had a similar problem with a RoadRunner cable modem; turning the modem on and off solved it.

Do you have Appletalk set to Ethernet? And the router TCP/IP settings in the TCP control panel?

No routers in the setup right now.. it's straight into the wall jack.

The same cable, and a Windows box in the same room, works.
