I'm thinking about getting an sgi workstation. $100 can get my a basic indigo2 impact, i was just wondering if there was any experience in the mla that could support or discourage my thinking. From what i've read, they are still awesome machines, but i haven't read too much current stuff. thanks for any help._______________________ Sgt. All I know is that I've always wanted one! I say go for it- we may not know much, but I bet we can all figure it out... and hey, if I can use Windows on a semi-regular basis, then I can get anything to work! ;-) SpaceBoyOfficial MLA Raconteur AppleBASIC FOREVER! I've never really used SGI machines, but I know they're good for A/V work. I've seen screenshots of Trax running under IRIX, and it looks like a pretty nice multitrack audio program.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700 (2), LC 575, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

I've only ever used one for basic stuff (email, web), and yes, IRIX is cool. Other than that, I can't say, sorry.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I almost got an SGI indigo2 barebones... for $20 (USD) but then... I wanted RAM for IW and for iMacI know that SGIs are considered "visual workstations' and am surprised to hear that normal apps exist there is a model called the O2 that's really cool for AV work iThink... got full AV I/O but it's on the side... and just gotta love that squat purple microtower case Official 68k videographer |

Yeah, the O2 has killer av i/o, but lacks in raw processor power. I think i'm going to watch patiently for a good deal and not rush. they way a ton and shipping is a lot. I hear irix is cool, but hard to get a copy from sgi, there are a few linux distros out there that suport mips. There's a graphics card (maximum card) for the indigo 2 impacts that crunches 960 Mflops! It's like 7 years old, but still sells for hundreds of dollars. Of the three cards, the low end alone does 360 Mflops and the middle fo the road is 6xx something. That doesn't include the 64bit processors I've been spending all my free time reading about them and it's been quite entertaining. Those boxes are BEASTS!! _______________________ Sgt. The only SGI I've used was an Impact 10,000. They had a couple dozen of them at CalArts in the animation department, and they were actually my first real exposure to Unix. Although I don;t have any plans to get an SGI workstation, I am planning to get an SGI 1600SW one of these days to use as a desktop display for my TiBook! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Here at uni we've got a dead O2, sitting on a shelf. I love the quick-change PCI cards, and yes, it does have a nice complement of audio (and optionally, video) ports.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

wait... (Proof that I LOVE windows NT 4.0) if an SGI workstation says for "MIPS" and me NT 4.0 server CD says "PowerPC, MIPS, Pentium PRO, Alpha... ect ect.."does this mean that that I should be trying winNT 4.0 on an unadorned SGI like the Indigo model that I saw... that would be ever-so-fun :) YAAY! i don't know if windows nt would work or not. I haven't read much on that, but i think that's because if people are using those machines, they aren't going to smother it with windows, imho._______________________ Sgt. ok... I have been informed also that there would be no programs for NT on MIPS... so i'm not sure as I would choose it as a permantne OS thoughOfficial 68k videographer |
