I'm so happy right now I can barely contain myself. A while back I posted about the 10$ q840av that I got that wouldn't work. After numerous tries and different suggestions no chime, no nothing.

Then just for no reason today I decided to check out Danamania's site again and I was reading about the pram battery problem on the 605. Now, I had replaced the battery already with no luck, but I decided to do the on-off thing just as an extremely last resort. AND IT NOW WORKS! Apparently the old battery didn't have enough charge to get it booted but enough to leave a garbled PRAM. I had the battery out of it because I figured the board was no good and I guess the month of just sitting on my dresser totally drained the pram and allowed it to boot. It still wouldn't boot but the on off thing made my Sony monitor go from amber to green! So I let it sit for a few moments and I see a flashing floppy! I am right now listening to a .mod file using MacMikMod on my Q840av board sitting on my bed.

Well I had it turned off for about 15 minutes while I re-assembled the case and then it wouldn't come on again. It had power but no chime and no video. So did the on/off trick again and it came back on. I have no pram battery in it now but I plan to get one. I just wish they didn't cost more than I paid for the computer!

Just for no good reason I tried my A/UX drive from my 650 but it stopped saying I needed to update my MacOS. Figured. But I nabbed the AV Quadra disc image from the server so I'll be having some fun to night. Not to mention I have a fat version Avid Video Shop from my 6360 AV/TV card

You didn't waste your money on a new PRAM battery. As far as I know the power-flicking-on-off trick is only a temporary measure.

I don't know the exact specs on the PRAM batteries (4.5 V????), but it sure seems like a person with a surplus of brains and a deficiency of cash could hack together a suitable replacement. I'm imagining maybe 3 AAA batteries, a bit of aluminum foil, some tape and the electrical leads from the dead PRAM battery would provide a kludgy, but usable alternative.

Cheers,
