Well, as jt apointed out and I soon discovered for myself, the resolution provided by the Q660av's video inputs is less than steller, to say the least. What can I expect from my recently purchased 840av? I don't need dvd playback, by any means, but does anyone know if I'll be able to get 16-bit color at "normal" size? How about 8-bit 640x480? (without horrible distortion, that is! Full screen looks DISGUSTING on the 660av) That would be nice - full screen NES! I'd love to play SNES, too. Tell me 16-bit will fly.

I'm sorry you had a falling out with your baby. Good luck with the 840av, I know how much you were looking forward to having one.

Yeah, with the stock 1MB of VRAM video play-through is 8-bit at 640x480. You need to max out the VRAM at 2MB to get 16-bit playthrough/capture.

Incidentally, when I went to max out my 840av's VRAM, I ended up buying four 256k VRAM SIMMs and later realized that I alredy have four of 'em! So, if you're interested, I'm willing to sell/trade the extra four that I now have.

Shoot! I just bought 4. I only had 2 in the Q800, so I found an OK deal for 4 simms. US$8 plus $4 shipping. Didn't break my bank, but a trade or sale within the MLA would have been nice.

I wouldn't say I exactly had a falling out with the 660av. The concept is still awesome, even though the vram limitation is a bit bothersome. If I wanted, I could play the NES through the 660av into the TV - a useless, slightly impractical, but absolutely exciting idea.

There's a problem now, though. The 840av can do everything the 660av can, but much much better. What will become of the poor thing? Will I ever use it? Why would I? I'll have no problem letting Layla, my Q800 go, because I put it together for the sole purpose of using Mpegdec, and never felt the connection to it. Plus, it just didn't have the cool AV label attached to it, and the floppy drive doesn't really work. But this 40mhz behemoth is about to come in and just blow the older AV out of the water in EVERY department. How can I remain faithful? It almost seems pointless to have such a powerful machine and a less capable one just for the sake of having it. I'm having a breakdown...

Cinemafia,

If you still have the VRAM, I am interested in them.

if you used your 660av as attached networked storage, for all your macs to store stuff... that's a good use, you could put a nix on it and see if that worked with the AV stuff, you could use the 660 as a server, or you could send it to someone who'd use it well

Network them, I SAY NETWORK THEM(Booming Yorkshire accent)

now attach about 8 monitors & just sit & goggle, you could get fractal patterns I'm sure though I havn't personally seen this on mac, hook em up & watch Scooby Doo(insert your fav film in place of SD) on tv, mac monitor(top res on 840av), & on 660av's monitor.

Is there a music prog to show flashing colours on screen which follows the beat of music? (even my Atari 800xl managed this feet)

Cheers our kid:-)
