Being that I only have one WiFi-compatible computer, and that I live in a relatively small apartment, the cost of setting up an Airport network outweighs its fun-factor for me. So, instead of spening $500 to get my TiBook wireless, I decided to keep the wire (one wire, anyway) and give myself some distance at the same time. How did I do this? I picked up a 100' Cat-5 ethernet cable off eBay today for a measy $10.25! I plugged it into my cable modem (which is in the farthest bedroom) and ran the slack out the front door! As I type, I'm sitting in the sun by the pool that's about 50 feet from my front door. Wow...this is cool. It's warm, sunny and windy here, and there's nobody around to disturb me! I have to start coming out here everyday to sit by the pool and "work". Also, I got a pair of JVC HA-D15 headphones also off eBay for only $9 and they rock. I have 'em on right now and I can barely hear anything around me...they cover the ears completely and block out most outside noise...plus, they have a huge range, all the way down to 15Hz and all the way up to 23kHz, which means they put out some really rich, deep, clear audio. Folks...I'm in heaven. If you need me after dark, I'll be in the hot tub. Hmmm...now if only they made a waterproof TiBook cover... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

cool! I'd love a wireless network! Its kinda expensive and I only have 2 PC laptops that can't run on battery power. So, its kinda not worth it for me.also... Cine, I've been waiting over a week, check your email please!

Hmm, here at uni tripping over any cables used to be "failing the intelligence test." Of course, I doubt telling that to an irate tenant is going to stop them sueing you... ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I'll have to admit though, $10.25 sounds alot better than $500.Edited by - XRA on 19 Nov 2002 20:10:27 |

spend 50 bucks on 1000 feet of cable... get some crimpers and rj-45 ends and make your own cable for a lot less money!________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

Fa real. I hear that Airport gets 200', but also that the titanium case of the PowerBook blocks much of the signal, anyway. So, my $10.25 investment is well worth it. quote: spend 50 bucks on 1000 feet of cable...
I have looked at getting a 1000' spool...but that would just be ridiculous. Somebody's bound to snap it with a lawn mower by the time I get to the corner store... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Oh boy, if you're thinking of one straight shot then I should have mentioned repeaters to go every 100m. Of course you can only use 2 of those between source and your computer.... I think they're powered too, so that may be hard to lug down to you're corner store to show em' what your significant other but you have no clue what it is but she gave you a pic of it.... Then I guess you'll be stuck to printing out photos like in that HP commercial for their camera with the base station. Anyway now I'm rambling. ________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

I was wondering how long one could run Cat-5 without a repeater, thanks! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Supposedly, the max run is 100 meters.I've seen signals die long before that, and runs of over 500meters work. It all depends on the conditions... how many florecent lights get near it... if it's strung thru the air... all sorts of things... ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Here's a question, according to Apple, Gigabit ethernet requires a Cat-6 cable. But, the OEM for the 100' Cat-5 cable I bought says it supports up to 1000MB/sec. Of course, it's not like I have another Gigabit-ready machine or hub lying around to use it on anyway, but ya think it'll handle it?666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

According to my memory, () I've seen tests that indicated that Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5 would get around 350 Mbit, better than 100BaseT, but not as good as you'd get with Cat6.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

Cool...I figured as much (somewhere above 100, but less than 1000). I think I may pick up a short, Cat-6 crossover cable just in case I find myself needing to swap files with another TiBook or G4 tower. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 22 Nov 2002 00:50:18
