Well, the title says it all! I'd like to find a Mac II (or above, up to Quadra, I think) ROM file, so I can play around with "Basilisk II" on my PowerBook G4. I do own a Mac II series machine, but I can't get at it, as it's at my dad's house a million miles from here. So, if I understand it right, you wouldn't be breaking any rules/laws in emailing me a copy of the ROM, or a link to where I can find it...
Thanks, and sorry if this is outta bounds...

Thanks again,

PS Just for reference, try sending it to huckdunsany@mac.com first- I think I've got the most space there...

Well, I got the emulator running (thanks Beanie!!), but now I'm running into a strange problem. I went into the Basilisk pref's, and created a 200-meg hard drive file/image, but it was created as a ".vol" file, which I can't open in OS X to install files to! Most other computer emulators I've used will create a standard disk image, so it can be altered from the 'real' OS, in this case OS X.
Any ideas? I'm just trying to get System 7.x installed...
Thanks,

Well, SpaceBoy, I got mine running under WinXP. I know there are some differences between the volume files between the OSes, I've found. I can't seem to get Basilisk II under FreeBSD reading my Mac disk image that I made under Windows.

Anyhow,

There should be an option in Basilisk's settings to allow the emulator to read off of your real Mac's hard drive (I know the Windows version makes an icon on my Mac desktop that says "My Computer"). The only way I can think to do this is to first create the partition, then boot the emulator off of a floppy. (If you need a bootable floppy image, try the Apple Network Setup Disk.) Hopefully, as soon as you get into MacOS, you should be able to read off of your real Mac's hard drive, and copy 7.5.3 or whatever MacOS you choose to install over, and set it up.

Writing back to the host OS is a little more difficult, at least under Windows. I created a 100MB FAT16 partition, and used Apple FileExchange to talk to it.

Aaah, the joys of having an 80GB hard drive...

Good luck!

Well, the best setup I've managed so far has been just to create a standard HFS disk image (200 megs, I think), mount it on my OS X desktop, and then just drag-n-drop whatever stuff I download onto it. So far, so good!

PS The emu runs much much faster in full-screen mode, but I've got a question: How does one switch from full-screen mode back to the 'real' OS? So far, I've only been able to 'get out' of the emulated MacOS by shutting down the virtual Mac- hardly an elegant solution...
