Hello,

After reading the full page Newton 2100 article in the latest Macaddict (page 10, Dec '02) I've been motivated to actually get one. I've been lurking about on ebay checking prices out and I notice sometimes there are Newton 2000's upgraded to 2100's. And many 2100 auctions expicitly stating that they are not upgraed 2000's. For all intents and purposes, isn't the upgraded 2000 pretty much the same as the 2100, if only for the extra RAM?

Also, I have a 'Newton that got away' story. One night I saw this great 2100 on ebay. Perfect screen w/extra screen protectors, case, keyboard, modem, Flash RAM, AC adapter, stylus, battery, AA battery tray (IIRC)...all for the buy it now price of $125! I was gone for only 5 minutes (checking my finances online, no less). I reload the page and someone already got it! I was so depressed. So now I'm determined to get one. Wish me luck!

an upgraded 2000 and a 2100 are identical machines, except for the case. the only real difference between the 2000 and the 2100 is the ram onboard which ends up giving the 2100 more heap space and speeds it up. I've read about guys surface mounting their own ics on their 2000's motherboard to add the ram. I have a 2000 and i'm perfectly happy with that, but it seems that the "true" die hard newton users have 2100s. I heard about that article, but i haven't read it yet. Good luck with the newton hunt, ebay can be a safe place as long as you read between the lines. there's also a website you can buy them at, but i can't seem to remember the url (i just woke up) i'll repost when i can remember, it's www.jcsalesince.com or something like that.

Thanks for the info and link. Great packages they have there. I wonder why the AA battery tray is going for so much on ebay if J&K is selling it for much less. They probably don't know.

I also came across this:

If the pic is representive of the unit, then it looks like a good buy and I can save $20.

that's not bad at all if you're wanting to avoid ebay. I think you might be able to get a better deal, but ebay can be tough if you don't have the time or patience to mess with it.

I found another newton, an upgraded 2000, on ebay (which will probably be bought by the time I finish this), although I may not actually go for this one (I just ordered a small handful of much needed upgrades for my B&W, leaving me feeling a bit stingy). But a question arose about preferences. I'm not familiar with the Newton OS, but I know that the Newton handles it's data differently than the standard file system of the Mac. I was wondering if it was possible to copy, say, whatever the newt learned of my handwriting style and transfer it to another Newt, in all likelyhood I'll probably acquire at least 2 Newts down the road. And, would backing up the newt's data to a flash RAM card allow me to copy everything to another newt as well (it sounds redundant to me, but I have to ask because I'm not familiar with how it works). Thanks in advance.
