My 540 has a powerport mercury 19.2 modem. The comuter reconizes the modem, but when I try to connect, I get modem in use or couldnt initilize port error, depending on what software or os I try. It this the modem shot?

It's problably an application opened.Have you a monitor for your modem. No driver is necessary to make a connection with your modem.

Are you sure you have the speed and all that other communications stuff set correctly?

You might also see if another application or service is using the serial port (IIRC, the Powerbook 520 has only a single serial port?). Appletalk or a printer are the most likely culprits that might block access to the port and cause the offending messages.

Good luck,
