Well, my 2100 arrived today! I have some questions about software. I am used to Palm OS 3.5.1 and was wondering if there is software that will allow me to do the following things. Also, where can I find it online?

1. word processing & drawing
2. internet access
3. email access for POP3
4. to do list
5. games

Oh, by the way. Is there any app out there where the default screen that you see when the Newton is turned on is like the Palm Applications screen?

Thanks from a NewtNewbie,

icebook1

Great news about your new 2100! Enjoy.

Best place to start looking for all the stuff you are asking about is

http://www.unna.org/

All the software has been well sorted and should be relatively easy to find.

Sorry have to run to V-ball. More upcoming

Welcome to the club!

First: http://www.chuma.org/newton/faq/

That's the FAQ you should read.

Now, onto specifics:

1. word processing & drawing
NewtonWorks! It's in the Apple section of http://www.unna.org/unna/

2. internet access
Also in the Apple section at the above, you want NIE 2.0 (Newton Internet Access 2.0)

3. email access for POP3
There are many options includeing: Eudora Pro, EnRoute, SimpleMail, and likely others. I use EnRoute and SimpleMail. Available at unna.org

4. to do list
Built into your Dates programme. You may also try others available at.. you guessed it.... http://www.unna.org

5. games
I'm partial to Chiral. I think you can guess where you might find it.

Not sure exactly what you want... Maybe this? Tap the Extras icon on your button bar. Tap the i button and then Memory Info. Tap the "Make Extras the Backdrop"

That substitutes the Extras package for Notes as the background. I would suggest Avi's Backdrop however. It uses FAR less heap than either Extras or Notes.

Marchie - great info list.

The other great thing about Avi's Backdrop is is also a fix for the -10061 error (most of the time).

If you like Chess, Deep Green is pretty good.

I don't have a SER-001 but I understand that there aren't many left so if you want one you'll need to order it pretty soon

Thanks for the quick responses! I'm on my iBook, and don' have the time right now to d/l anything, but will do so very soon. I'm going to use a PC for the downloads and then burn them to a CD, so that I don't have to restore the type & creator codes.

What backdrop do you recommend? I saw Avi's and didn't like it that much (saw a pic on his website). I'm looking at either Newt95 or Mac-OS-Parody.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Avi's background can be customized so you are not stuck with the default. Check the archive for instructions. There also people who have created pics for use as backdrops

There used to be a background app from Newton Underground that was pretty cool. I think it had the Jolly Roger. Will look for this as this was what I was using before.

I also think that you can get a CD-ROM of the UNNA archive - saves bandwidth and it is pretty cheap for what you are getting

the newton underground backdrop is my personal favoutie, it is abailable on unna.org, do a search for nudrop. it is more fullfeatured than Avi's, and has tabs at the bottom of the screen that can be programmed to bring up different pages of the extra's drawer. I like it because it looks pretty, gives ou battery, and volume control and also an adjustable refresh rate heap meter. it also has a pretty logo in the upper left, and if you tap the newton bulb on it, the backlight comes on or off.

another worthwhile download is herb ottos poweroff package. it adds a little button at the bottom of the screen that shows percentage fo battery left when idle, you tap it once, it gives the temperature of the sensor, a second time, it gives you a button that says off and thus, if you click it, your newton will turn off, saving wear on the powerswitch.

anyway, good luck

Posting this makes me miss my newton, when I find the <insert 15 minutes worth of shouting derogaory names> that stole it, he will pay, and that is not a threat, that is a promise DAMNIT!!!

Great... how much is the UNNA CD? Is it well organized or does it look like the online archive?

Ummmmmm... oh yeah! Where can I find a battery cage for my 2100 (well, actually it's a 2000 upgrade unit) that will let me use AA or AAA batteries? I checked eBay and there aren't any.

Thanks,

OK, I downloaded NCU 2.0 and installed it on my Quadra 630. I have adequate amounts of RAM and such, but there is a problem.

When I initiate the sync, it connects to the Newt but says that my model is not supported by the software. How can I fix this? Also, is there an Apple application that I can use as a version of Palm Desktop? I don't have the old v. 2.1 of Desktop, and would rather use an Apple program.

Thanks,

Oh, and BTW--

I'm at UNNA, and found NIE 2.0, but am confused as to what I need to download to make it all work. Can someone walk me through the steps of where to go online (at least UNNA) to download the proper files? I also can't figure out my NCU prob. mentioned above. Apparently I have the latest version?

Help!

One more time!

Also, can I purchase somewhere the original disks and/or the CD that came with the 2000 or 2100 Message Pad??

Thanks!

I just looked at UNNA and the last version of Newton Conection Utilities (NCU) they have is version 1. Look here:

http://www.unna.org/unna/apple/connection_utils/ForMac/NewtonConnectionUtilities/

Is it possible that you have the wrong software? Older MPs needed a different software package to do synching with a computer.

From the read me:
Required Packages <these are located in separate folders>
• INETSTUP.PKG
• INETENBL.PKG
Modem-Serial Support
• MODMSUP.PKG
• ISPTMPLT.PKG
LocalTalk Support
• LOCTSUP.PKG
Ethernet Support <also check chuma.org for specific directions on installing ethernet>
• NEWTDEV.PKG
• ENETSUP.PKG

Installing NIE 2.0:
1 - Use any Newton package installation program (e.g. Newton Connection Utilities).
2 - Install the "Required Packages" first.
<note: the folder is called REGPKGS>
3 - Install other packages as necessary (see the sub-folders).
4 - If you install ethernet support, it is important that you install the "NEWTDEV.PKG" before you install the Farallon driver.

-- end --

You will need to get NCU working before you can do anything else. Please let us know how you have made out with that problem. The pdf file of the NCU installation would probably be a big help too

I went back online and found NCU 1.0 and now everything is working great. Thanks for the help with NIE...
