muahaha, I went into my favorite computer store, hoping for a find of a 68k mac, but I came out with not a 68k, but a PPC!

an 8500/180 to be xact

The poor thing looked as if it was shag carpeted on the outside, the case was askew, and the thing was improperly put back together. well, with a little spit, polish, and windex, the thing looks like new and appears to be the stock 2GB configuration, the one capable of capturing 30FPS video!!!
it boots, albiet very slowly, so I fear there must be a RAM issue, there was no OS on the HDD so I will do a clean install of 7.whatever I have at home.

well, I am glad it works, and I have a new PPC to live with 8600/300 that is me main mac.

yay

oh, I forgot the price.....

$15 for the lot!

I will have to go liberate the poor tortured 8100 that is still there that I was forced to leave behind because of economic concerns :(

woohoo, another main mac!!

nice! my 8500 was my first ppc. It sits next to my 8600/300 as well exept my 8500 has a g3 300 in it. last i remember the 8500 will capture 30 fps at 1/4 screen, which isn't the end of the world, but not quite broadcast quality.

I read the macworld review for the 8500, and they said that apple said that the 2gb model could capture at 30fps

one problem, it is going veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyy sllllooooooowwwwwwlllllly
happy mac smiles at me for 5 minutes, and it took about 2o for the OS9 CD rescue disk icon to appear on my desktop, signifying finderloading.

any ideas?

Cool! Great score! But why are you going to install System 7? Even 8.1 would be better on the thing, although 8.5.x, 8.6 or 9.1 would be even better. Also, since this is a PPC liberation, i'm afraid that i'm going to have to move this to the Lounge. Great score though!

your 8600 has basically twice the capture power of the 8500. From my experience it has nothing to do with processor speeds or anything, it's how the hardware is designed. You'll also need the vram maxed out.

as far as the slowness, does it have the cache dimm (simm??) located next to the ram? your 180 604 has no cache on the daughter card like modern g3/g4 upgrades do (or your 8600/300 with the mach5 mobo and 1 meg inline cahce on the daughter card, mach5 mobos were an exception to the rule, that's why you won't be able to put the 300 604ev into the 8500.) If the cache isn't there, it'll be painfully slow. I would also try pulling out ram and testing it all out one at a time. I know that's a pain with that case, i've done it.

I know
yes it has the cache simm, though I am wondering what the ROM SIMM slot does, what would one put in there?
I know that my 86oo has twice tha capture power, what with the mach 5 architecture
anyway, I am installing system 7 on it because that is the best compatability level for AppleShare IP 5
prototyping a server
anyway, the slowness seems to have resolved itself.

I am stoked about this find
