My Q660av displays that wonderful shade of gray for about 30 sec before finding the startup disk. I just discovered that I have 2 mac driver partitions on my HD - could this cause it? It seems like something you wouldn't want to have.

Before I tell you that you need to reformat and repartition your drives, try this:

Use the Startup Disk control panel and make sure your hard drive is selected in it. It could be set to the CD drive, or no drive at all, which slows it down on startup.

Yeah, I had checked that, and the HD was the only option there anyway. Inexplicably, though, this problem righted itself a few days ago. I didn't change anything...all I did was inspect it with Apple HDSC and restarted! Go figure.
