Found this link on LEM, and thought it may be of some use around here. Not quite ready for prime time, but it does look hopeful.

Yeah. I can't wait for the site to become as big as System 6 Heaven.

All hail System 7.1! (runs happily on my IIfx--which he calls 'infamous'; I assume he means 'famous')

*and* it's running on a MicroQuadra in disguise. Overclocked. with debian.

That's a good combination that one, if I do say so myself :D

Well it certainly isn't very useful, but I'm glad to see someone else as fond of 7.1 as I am. Yes, I'm still running it on my Q660av. Fast, low ram, little disk space. He summed it up. Poor appletalk networking with OS X, though. I may end up needing to upgrade to 8.1. I never felt that 7.5 and 7.6 were really worth what they took, unless you're just starting from scratch and need certain features right quick.

Curse Apple. With the choice between System 7.1 and OS X, 7.1 will win out anyday. Indeed, OS X is no longer installed on my PPC750. It is now running Debian, which has a working implementation of AppleTalk. Mac-on-Linux is much better than Classic in some respects anyway. I particularly like how it runs on the framebuffer so that I can use a great GUI without having to put up with Aqua or X.

Now it is simply a matter of finding an appropriate ROM to run some version of System 7 on MOL.

OS X does have a working implementation of AppleTalk, just not a very backwards compatible one!

there's a little hack that's been mentioned before for osx that allows networking with the old macs and when i had the IIci and the 576 up and going, i had no problems. (oh yeah, and a q650)

I'll drink to that! For some reason it seems i can log into the LC630 from my iMac, but not vice versa...

Okay, I found the fix and it makes sense. But I had already tossed
the OS X install and have replaced it with an ever-improving Linux
install. The sysv style init has been replaced with a bsd style init,
which just happens to boot straight into Mac-on-Linux (thus MacOS 9).
I have the traditional Macintosh operating system and a functional
unix core. What else can I ask for?

(Well, maybe the appropriate ROM to boot System 7.5.5?)

But AppleTalk in OS X is broken. All that this fix proves is that
Apple sabotaged it to push their customers to use products they don't
necessarily want.

Hi there, Scott Holder here. I'm the one running the less-than-useful Sys71Heaven :) Sorry for the delay in getting anything useful there, I've been diverted by other projects (largely getting an IRC and mail server running on my internal network, using another 68k Mac ;) ) but I hope to get something moderately useful up tonight or tomorrow. Going to start with the basic necessities to make 7.1 work in today's world, and move up from there. I hope to host local downloads of everything to avoid broken links, as well as provide Resedit bits for the Resediting I've done.

That page has gotten much more linked than I'd ever expected it to period, especially before there was anything useful there ;)

Once I get a page built, I plan on hosting a mirror on an LCIII actually running System 7.1 :) I will keep the main page where it is though because I would like it to be picked up by search engines. I haven't figured out a good way to host two different pages on two servers on the same port.

Anyway, watch that space :) With any luck it'll have something nifty.

Scott Holder
Oh, by the way, that initial screenshot is indeed a real install of 7.1, though on an emulator ;) I did not figure out some way of stuffing 512 megs into an LC475. Didn't have a machine handy that needed a reinstall :)

Maybe you could host it locally with SilverHTTP? It's my HTTP server that supports 68K, PPC, and Carbon. I haven't tested it on System 7.1, but it works allright on System 7.5.5 and up. You need Open Transport.

EDIT: OOPS, I put MacHTTP by mistake.

======================
Current Macs:
iMac G4 (main mac)
PowerMac 7300/180 (server)
PowerMac 6100/66 (no monitor!)
Quadra 610 (no monitor!)
Performa 400, upgraded to 475 (busted monitor!)
Apple IIe (dead, but I still keep it :,( )
