No, you need a SCSI cable. Physically -- I said _physically_ -- a parallel cable will fit, as long as both the Mac and the scanner both have DB25 connectors. But electrically it'd be a disaster.

It doesn't matter that the scanner isn't SCSI ?

Of course it matters, that's why it would be a disaster electrically!

I'm not sure if the DB-25 on serial or parallel PC ports will fit Mac SCSI ports without looking, but it probably won't hurt to plug JUST THE CABLE into your Mac as long as you don't attach anything to the other end of it! As long as nothing is tied together in the cable that will damage your Mac's SCSI controller or worse, anyway.

If you attach a device with the wrong signals nothing good usually comes of it.

If it's a parallel port scanner . . . you don't.

You don't. Parallel devices cannot be attached to a Mac. The only exceptions are:

(1) One can attach parallel printers to USB-enabled Macs with a USB-to-parallel cable. But no 68k Mac can be USB-enabled; and

(2) Some Orange Micro PC compatibility cards have a parallel port on them. I don't know if any NuBus-based Orange Micro cards have such a port, however, and I don't know if the parallel port devices can even be accessed from the Mac OS environment. (Apple's PC Compatibility Card had an optional accessory card with a parallel port on it as well, but that accessory card only worked with the PCI-based PC Compat card, and of course the Centris series are not PCI-based).

Well, i guess i can forget about that then. The thing is that this scanner besides a parallel port also has another round port that looks like the mac serial port and is labeled as "option".

Bert

BTW, anyone got a NuBus video card for cheap ?

I'm 99% sure that's where the optional transparency adapter plugs in (it's a DIN8 DC conduit to provide power for the transparency adapter's backlight AFAIK).
