The MPEG Media System is a hardware decoder for MPEG-1 that's well worth $10 in its own right, but I have a hunch that some of the clearance cards at Shreve Systems might be somewhat more capable than the first revisions. richfiles pointed out the Incompatible 60 Pin Connector Mystery on some late versions of the Video Slot card like the one that was included with my FM/TV Tuner Card. Check it out, even if the 60 pin cards only do MPEG-1, they'll be fun toys to experiment with, methinks! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

ok, tell me if this is correct: the mpeg media system is basically a pds card that will enable mpeg-1 playback... and it will connect to the apple video system (i have one of the regular ones, with the 34-pin connector). so i can play VCDs on my performa, or whatever. is this basically it? and i dont see it in the clearance section, only on the video card page for $49....-- Performa 630 LCIII SE |

Yup! That's what the well documented 1995 MPEG-1 decoder card does. I'm interested to find out if a later revision of it might have a connector compatible with this 60 Pin interface:http://homepage.mac.com/cathyseggs/Richfiles/Takky/Takky6500VideoIn60.jpg . . . and some less than well known capabilities lacking in the card designed before the advent of MPEG-2. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF edit: OOPS! They gave me that price when I called the main number (non 800) to inquire about the connector on their cards. The clearance stuff is WAAAAY down at the bottom of one of the main (bargains ?) pages. I didn't see it listed there, if it was a mistake I hope they'll honor it for my order, I've been holding out, trying to resist ordering one for $49 for quite a while now. Looks like Apple revised their instalation manual in 1996 to explain how to choose a standard 34-34 pin cable and a 60-34 pin cable. Maybe the planned 60 pin MPEG-2 card never shipped?http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/hardware/0309039AMPEGCDUD.PDF jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. Nope, this one is an 630 Series LC Slot Card thet attaches directly to the Video Slot card with a ribbon cable interconnect.http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA015761/Hardwares/images/5200-MB.JPG I've got a few links describing it and I've been looking for info on its possibilities for mpegdec. Here's the NuBus Mafia scan showing the TI DSP and C-Cube MPEG decoder IC's.
http://www.applefritter.com/boards/video/appleMPEG/MPEG_Card_Front.jpg Since it dumps the MPEG feed straight to the Video Slot card's RCA output jacks, it might take all the load off the 040 in a 630 or even a PPC Road Apple like my 5260, dunno yet tho. jt ™. There is a NetBSD driver with source code for the DSP it uses. It might even work with a few mods with the mac 68k NetBSD or the mac 68k linux. tms320av110.c tms320av110

Cool, one article mentions droping down to 8bit from 16bit from the soundtrack for a heavy demand video MPEG, here are the bookmarks I have handy:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50050 http://www.insanely-great.com/features/011221.html http://www.mug.jhmi.edu/mirrors/InfoAlley/1095/16/mpeg.html http://cmc.qub.ac.uk/archives/mac-support/mac-support-08-1995/0016.html http://www.mug.jhmi.edu/mirrors/InfoAlley/0496/30/apple.html http://www.mcn.org/Heidsite/video/qttech.html#RTFToC16 http://www.extensionoverload.com/extension/ev.htm http://www.santarosa.edu/~ltrettin/shared/aboutmac/informINIT/extensions.html I'm surprised you hadn't checked this card out already, it's been talking about, on and off, for a while now. Have you got any more info on that NuBus MPEG-1 Decoder card? jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Nope, it'll only work in your 630 (if it's NOT a DOS compatible) because it requires the Video System Slot and the Video System Card for it.jt
