This is for sharing information on books you've found useful in helping diagnose and solve problems. I'm includeing Title, Author, Publisher, ISBN and a short description. What books have you found useful?

The Dead Mac Scrolls, by Larry Pina. Peachpit Press. ISBN: 0-940235-25-0
This covers quite a bit of material on fixing problems on:

  • Early Macs

  • Se and Se/30

  • Mac II

  • ImageWriter I and II printers

  • various external monitors

  • floppy drives (includeing how to replace drive head without test equipment)

  • LaserWriter/Plus/II-IINTX

It does all this on a componant level basis, ie "X resistor on the analog board is bad replace with Y", or "Turn this variable resistor just a bit", or "The ROM chips are bas, replace them"

Mac Classic & SE Repair and Upgrade Secrets, Larry Pina, Peachpit Press, ISBN 1-56609-022-9
Same kind of book as above, but with MUCH more detail on the SE and Classic family of Macs, Includeing fun things such as what to do when your logic board ADB chip dies (ie, replaceing it after you plugged a Keyboard into the thing HOT), replaceing keyboarad switches, why SE RAM Upgrades go afoul so often (it's the SIMM socket that's bad (resolder it! Here's how...), and how to do a full 800k -> 1.4 FDHD upgrade.

Those are what I have right now. Any others?

Maclopedia, Hayden Books

Great Book, with information on older machines (its dated 1996) thats useful to anyone, whether they are newbies or advanced users. Even comes with a CD.

The Mac Bible - 7th Edition, Peachpit Press

Sorta like the Maclopedia, but not quite.

Guide to System 7.5, Don Crabb, Hayden Books

Excellent book. A must-have for anyone running any version of System 7.5.x. This book covers *EVERYTHING* you would ever need to know about System 7.5, from navigating the desktop to using PowerTalk, AppleScript or getting a large corporate network ready for System 7.5.

If this one has not been said, I am shocked
If it has, it is worth reinforcing

The Dead Mac Scrolls, by Larry Pina, it handles problems from "my mac is beeping oddly", to "my mac is making a crackling noise and emitting smoke"

that is THE BEST Manual in the world

another indespensible reference for the steady-handed is a book on soldering

HAHAHA!!! OOH!!

"Inside Macintosh" it's a big fat series covering everything from interface guidelines, some of it's design, printers, A/UX, fixing macs, specs, comparisons, block diagrams... if ONLY I could find myself a copy!!!
by Apple

and

"AppleDesign" is just a must read if you want to know why your mac looks the way that it does, see some prototypes, and forerunners to the original iMac (they came pretty close before, when designing the TAM)

Ooooh, I just remembered...

The Apple Macintosh Book, by Cary Lu, Microsoft Press (!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)
A must-have for any 128k owner. Covers a lot of stuff, including history about the original Macintosh. Very good reading, and a very rare collectors item.

101 Ways to Use a Macintosh, by Thornburg.

A great, entertaining read in the spirit of the early Macintosh.
