maclover5 told me that someone had got a USB card running on a PB 190. Who was it, when, and how?{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

I don't remember that, what I remember was a wireless networking card success.USB peripherals on 68k is a back burner *obsession * project of mine, but I might have missed such a post. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

*just a guess* but if that PB190 was running a nix, and it was a common enough wireless card, someone may have ported the drivers to the 68k version of that nix... which might, OR might not be very hard...same *should* go for a USB card or a firewire card or one of those cool combo dualie things Official 68k videographer |

Now that i think of it, it had to have been a Wifi card i was talking about. USB cards require CardBus, which no 68ks have.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Yeah... 802.11 on a 68k is still really cool! I think it would be *very* cool to see if someone made a PDS 802.11 card or something like that....Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

Yup! CardBus and USB sound like they should work on 68k when you look at it from the standpoint of O.S. level support, but neither will ever probably happen. The O.S. revs that seem to overlap 68k and early PPC machines (NuBus slot manager architure) also were developed to support the early PCI slot manager architure machines, IIRC. USB, CardBus and PCI support was never implemented for the 68k CPU, just for the PPC/PCI side of things. The real division of Macs is along the lines of the NuBus/PCI slot manager architectures, not 68k/PPC. jt . Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. A 68000, certainly a 68030, would probably be able to support USB from a hardware standpoint. The point is that it's a I/O architecture/system software issue, not a necessarily a hardware issue.USB is probably more likely to support using NuBus cards on pathetic, unexpandable iCrap Macs some day than ever working the other way around on 68k. Check out this ISA Slot->USB adapter imagine running an ancient proprietary I/O card over USB on a modern PC! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Are you saying that if there was a 68k with the PCI architechture... we *might* be closer to having USB?I second shakti's motion! "if anyone can do it, trash can!" Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

Y'know Cory, i don't doubt it. I once heard somewhere that the Apple USB drivers are perfectly able to run on a 68k.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

That'd be my understanding of the requirements to utilize the existing system software code base, even if it turns out to be portable to 68k.

Thanks for the enthusiasm, but that kind of project is not even remotely possible without major system software development. Check out the old USB threads for info on turning a generic USB controller or an embedded proc into something that'll convert USB KBD/Mouse input to ADB, that's about the only thing that might ever come to pass for 68k.jt ™. KVM use with USB peripherals alongside modern macs would be my use for it.Creating a bi-directional USB<->SCSI interface would probably be the only other possibility for using USB peripherals. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Good ideas! Just a shame that so far, no companies have explored the (im?)possibilities of bi-directional USB-SCSI adapters.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |
