Howdy, folks!
My room-mate's boyfriend came over last night, and we were all just hanging out, chatting 'bout this-and-that (he's gonna buy a PS2 soon, so I was giving him some tips 'bout good games), and he suddenly bursts out with "oh, hey, I've got an old Mac you can have... if you're interested..."!
Of course I was interested, but he couldn't really tell me much about it, other then the model number: It's a Performa 550! Seems this was his dad's old computer, which got passed on to him years ago, and has been sitting in a box in the garage ever since. He's quite certain it boots, but past that I don't really know much about it yet... he may bring it over today, or at some point in the next few days....
Anyway, as cool as the 550 is/was (see: http://lowendmac.com/500/lc550.shtml ), the first thing I thought was that it would make the perfect upgrade system, for when I finally get a Color Classic, hopefully sometime in the near future. Between the 550's mobo and my slot-loading CD-ROM drive, I've got just about everything I'd need to trick out a Color Classic pretty good... until I start looking at PPC upgrades..... heh heh....

That's what I'm thinking! Between the slot-loader, and an upgraded 550 mobo, man, this thing's gonna rock!

Get a LC575 mobo, then u get to have a commslot so you can have onboard ethernet plus a upgrade. And the 575 has some cool video features made by focus and is upgradable to powerpc.

From what's posted in the CC forum over on fritter, the only mobo really worth fitting to a CC seems to be the 580/630 so you can eventually do a 6360/6500 PowerCC hack to use a Sonnet L2/G3 in it. But the 550 AB and Yoke parts sound like a really nice addition to the project.

No need. The Sonnet upgrade card has Ethernet built into it!

Who needs a G3 when you have the GOD of all 68k's? You REALLY need to go look at this sonnet card.

That sonnet upgrade is still yuck because it uses the CC's poopy 16-bit data path for an '040! oye!

It has 32 megs on board the accelerator, IIRC, that should fix the problem nicely, no?

Do a 630/580 upgrade tho, a CC needs the Video Card/Tuner!

Hmmmm... good info! I'll keep an eye out for a 630/580...
At first, I was just caught up in the idea of somehow jamming a slot-loading CD drive into a CC, but now it's starting to look like I could well transform the CC into a serious powerhouse system... once I get one, that is...

Later, folks!

PS Hey Catsdorule- sorry 'bout the slowness re: trade list- It's been a seriously busy week! Anyway, if you're still interested in sell/trading that CC, drop me a line at the usual place. Thanks! :-)

Check out the CC forum on fritter, one day I may get one to throw a 6500 Drawer and my Sonnet G3 into it, dunno. It's a major project to get a high end PowerCC up and running and a righteous 630 transplant is just about as much work

It's fun hanging out over there and researching those TinyTrinitronFeetsMac variants even tho I don't even have one or any solid plans to get a CC as yet.

SOmething even cooler I just though of. If you did up it to G3, someone on www.mac4sale.com is selling IDE IMAC slot loading DVD drivves. For $20!
Now wouldn't that be cool.

Yeah, but to do that you have to do a Takky CC style hack. The 580/630 mobo doesn't just slide in like the 575's, due to the different board size and the different length edge connector.

Well, I've got the 550, and, while it is a very cool machine (the case is especially cool!), it's unbearably slow! Granted, it's only got 5 megs of RAM, but still, it's really reallly reeeaaallllly slow. If I'm gonna turn a CC into a kick-ass machine based on this motherboard, it's gonna need to seriously upgraded.
Any ideas on how to go about this? What is this Takky upgrade that was mentioned? Really, I'm very new at this, so any basic info could be usefull....
Thanks again, everyone!

If you're gonna kick any @$$ you're gonna have to bite the bullet and put at LEAST a 580/630 board in the machine. And yes, it's a lot of work, just like I said. Check out Chris Lawsons CC FAQ and the comments in the threads in the CC forum over on fritter, you can't go wrong by asking Stuart, Chris & Co. for advice, but read thru the FAQ FIRST!
