AppleSpec says the oldest Mac OS my SE FDHD will run is 6.0.3. so far this evening i've booted System .97 (aka 1.0) System 3.2, System 4.2, and i may try 5.something... any other examples of times you've proved AppleSpec to be blatantly wrong?

Applespec list only what is supported, not what is possible, and they are still wrong with remarkable consistency.

Depends on how you look at it. Applespec lists the kinds of things that were supported when the machines were under warranty. Memory density has increased significantly, which is why SIMM capacities have gotten larger and AppleSpec hasn't updated to include larger memory configs because there is no sane reason for testing and supporting such configs.

That's just my interpretation of why they seem to be so wrong, but I think it makes sense.
