Been lurking for a while and thought I'd join up. I've read through most of the posts here and think I have a pretty good handle on it but I'd love to have all the info in one place: What is the best way to max out an 840AV? Let's just assume that I have a pretty open budget and want to trick it out for video. Let the suggestions fly! Thanks!! |

Max RAM out to 128 meg Put in the fastest 68pin SCSI card you can find hook up as many big@$$ drives to that card as you can Connect external LaCie DVD-RAM drive to SCSI port (yes, they made a 50 pin SCSI external DVD-RAM drive, it requires at least a 50 Mhz '030 to work) Max VRAM out to 2 megs Install Radius Rocket Stage II, and load ROcketShare on install MacPicasso 340 or any other 4 meg NuBus video card Connect 2 AppleVision 1710AVs: One to the onboard video, one to the NuBus card Connect two keyboards: A standard issue AppleDesign keyboard, and an Apple Adjustable Keyboard, 'cuz its cool. Connect some sort of Colour laser printer to the serial port Get as many types of ethernet tranceivers as you needFinally, load Mac OS 8.1 onto this beast. Don't forget to hook up your 120cm Rear Projection TV, 4 head stereo VCR, and DVD player, as well as your video camera! -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

on the subject of radius rockets, get an external NuBus cage with 15 slots and create a Pseudo-Skylab CCCLieutennant Commander (Pronounced Leftennant) 68k Macs Rescued: 2 Pluses, a 512KE, a Classic II, a Quadra 650, and a Quadra 660AV Contraband rescued: Power Computing PowerBase 200, and a PM 8600/300 Apple //s rescued: Apple //e |

I would also suggest internal scsi CD-RW. I'll bet there's a drive that would fit with a standard AppleCD 300i+/600i bezel{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

Here's the low-down on my 840av...128MB of RAM 2MB of VRAM 1x 2GB 7,200 rpm Ultra-Wide SCSI drive (OS) 2x 4GB 7,200 rpm Ultra-Wide SCSI drives (RAID level 0) Yamaha 4x/8x SCSI tray-loading CD-R (gotta have a burner!) FWB JackHammer Ultra-Wide SCSI Nubus Card SuperMac SpigotPower AV Nubus Card AppleVision 1710 monitor (just noticed that the speakers are ported for more bass!) I'm awaiting the arrival of a DigiDesign Audiomedia II Nubus card that's coming as part of a trade from Dana (should be here by Monday) so that I'll finally be able to run ProTools 3.5. Also, I just got an external, double 5.25" bay 68-pin SCSI tower off ebay that I'm planning on buying another pair of Ultra-Wide SCSI drives for. I just have to decide what to get...two 9GB's? Two 18GB's? Two 36GB's? They'll be likewise configured in a striped array, of course. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

I think that unless you've raised one since it was a pup like candypunk, the 660av is a VERY difficult machine to develop any affection for whatsoever.jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

You use a CENTRIS 660AV, a machine that I practically drool over the thought of owning, as a MONITOR STAND!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? *faints* -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

NAH! I wouldn't be caught dead using one of those things as a monitor stand, it's a Quadra 660av! But its S-Video playthru from my DVD was so aweful I ended up trying my 5260(?) to drive my IntelliColor 20 and the display was so much better than the 660av's that I ended up installing the roadapple mobo in a 630 chassis to make room in the rack. It'll stay that way until I can set up a decent HDD to put the righteous Quadra 630 mobo back into my temporarily downgraded box. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. Well, jt, I'm going to have to concede your point about the video playthrough. Well, actually, I'm going to concede your point, to a point! I fired up the apple video player today, plugged in my trusty NES and played a game of marble madness. I had to shift down to 256 colors, unfortunately. At normal resolution (cmd-2), the video was not bad. Better than fair. At the smallest, it was of course fine. At the highest, it was absolutely hideous. Indeed at anything above the normal and almost anything between normal and small, it was pretty damn bad. So at that level, I'll give in. Don't watch DVD's on the thing. However, the sheer fact that I played nintendo on my Audiovision 14 (bleh) just makes me giddy. In fact, I didn't notice the dearth of photorealistic color because it was only an 8-bit nintendo! In principle and VERY limited practice, it's a fine machine!{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 4} { My baby: Q660av } |
