You may have noticed that ugly banner ad. I'm running it on a trial basis for a few weeks, if it gets decent cash then I'll be registering a few domains for .68k and stuff. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

It's worth putting up with the blinkers if they'll help fund the Forums and Website.BUT, I object to the "ALL HIGH-QUALITY TERM PAPERS" ad. I gather they're hosting this site, but students (and there are plenty on the Forum) should not be buying term papers from others, and we should not be encouraging them to do so. It's plain and simple CHEATING, and that's wrong. If I were teaching and discovered that a student of mine had purchased a term paper on the 'Net, I'd flunk him right there and then, and that would be just the beginning. I vote for the removal of those ads. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

What the maniac said . . .I'm torn about the whole term paper thing, I hate the idea of cheating in general, but I hate the idea of teachers too stupid to notice and an education system too entrenched to adapt even more. So I'm wondering which is the lesser of two evils and how to look at this in Darwinian terms. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. Just to clarify, DueNow.com isn't affiliated with LiteratureClassics... LitClassics provides sample essays in good faith for research purposes, and does not condone plagiarism. I agree with you in theory, but a few practical considerations: 1) DueNow.com does pay slightly above the normal rates for their ads 2) Going with a large provider would lock us into a contract, and leave us with no control as to what ads actually show 3) We don't really have the traffic to show purely focused ads like MacAddict or someone else would ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I agree witht he others on basis, and heck, im one of those teens! So I have a question, if this DOES work, and it DOES bring in cash, can you then switch it to a more long-term contract with a bigger company? I see the ad size as perfect, yes I know its there, but it doesn't detract from the overall site very much at all. ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? As to (1) Ye Olde Dope Peddler (© Tom Leherer) would probably pay a lot more, or maybe Ye Olde Porne Peddler, or Ye Hotte Compewter Mart, but would you run their ads? Sorry--I think that ethics should defeat 'practicality' every time. (2) You can always write in a provision to a contract to this effect: "We reserve the right to refuse to display and to delete any ad which in our judgment is in bad taste, inappropriate for our site, or which in our judgment supports, condones, encourages, or promotes unethical, immoral, or illegal activity." If the vendor does not agree, then find a different vendor. Contracts are records of agreements, can always be changed, and should never be accepted unless both parties agree to all the terms. I would never sign a contract that obligated me to run ads over which I had no control, even if they were offensive or illegal. I'm glad to hear that 'Literature Classics' does not 'condone' plagiarism, but I must say their activity looks pretty suspicious. Who knows what people do with papers they have downloaded ostensibly for 'research'? The Encyclopedia Brittanica, Google, and thousands of other sites (including universities and libraries!) are research facilities. LitClassics doesn't look like one to me. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven Edited by - mrlynn on 01 Nov 2002 09:26:51 |

ISTR that there was a fine line between using any kind of secondary source research material as a resource and plagiarism. Buying "**** Notes" or even a paper or two "for research" could easily be defended as long as the final product's content really was original. Most of the kids using these services are undoubtedly not that sophisitcated or ethical, but should B&N stop selling "***** Notes" too?I'm not giving you a hard time, ML, I find this an interesting ethical question. I don't think it's necessarily as single bit a color table issue as you're painting it! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

I do have to agree with that. There are too many variables. Suppose you were a tutor and you offered up an old essay for comparison and/or structure. Ethically speaking, as the tutor, you did a good thing and what the student does after that, you may never know. Sites and people that offer them out for sale aren't doing it for any other reason than the quick buck, that's true. I personally wouldn't condone that by itself. On the other hand, I don't see the problem with things like Cliff Notes because that is a well enough known item to the teachers and professors where they should be able to catch plagiarism. IMHO, it hurts the student more if they use the Cliff notes by themselves anyways. It takes away from their own ability to write a paper full of content. They make a better tool in terms of highlighting areas to key the memory after reading the book. In the end, the ones it really hurts are those that used the fake papers. When they need to be able to write on their own later in life, they'll have forgotten what little they knew and be unable to perform whats expected of them. Umm... what's the contract like?If we all click through and spend 10 minutes at their site all looking to see how "ethical" the place is, will we get enough money to possibly change from them to another company? ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Kill the stupid@$$ flashing link winner banners, they set off my migraine. Doesn't your contract let you choose what ads you can put on your site? if you can, kill the ones that look like messageboxes, or have fake pulldown lists in them. It kills the entire thing! oi, sorry, it is just that flashing banners like that STUPID WINNER LINK banner really give ne headaches. All you have to do is make a hosts file, and set the ip of the ad server to 127.0.0.1 ;)

From my friend the webmaster:
For the first half of the month (until the 15th), mainly DueNow.com banners will show. These are pay per click (20c per click from a unique visitor, where a unique visitor can't have visited within 24 hours), so clicking is essential... however, remember that people actually have to click IN to the site (click on the banner and then click on 'Enter DueNow.com'). From 15th onwards, there will be no DueNow.com banners and generally only pay per view ones--this is the phase we'll be interested in seeing.

I have to say I rather like the Lowes ad. Now we have a source for those dueling Estwings. "One slip and down the hole we fall" Styder's Community, a neighborhood for all: http://www22.brinkster.com/originalstryder/db/ Edited by - stryder on 03 Nov 2002 19:25:33 |
