Well, now that I've got my PowerBook back and running well again, I've run into an interesting problem: How to get my (legal) copy of AppleWorks installed, without having to wipe the drive (again)! I know that I can get it reinstalled by going through my "Software Restore" CD's, but this would mean wiping my drive and installing OS X 10.2.1 again, over the 9.1 install.... blech! This is waaaay too much work, just to get one (albeit much-needed!) program back. Any ideas? I'd call apple, but they'll ask $50 bucks to tell me the time of day, let alone how to solve the problem... sigh. Any ideas? I could sure use some, as I've got some homework that needs typing! Now I have not tried this, but can you go through and find *just* the appleworks pkg, or whatever installer it uses? I know pre-X you can do this, and I did it once with some sorta X thing. Dunno, just a thought.Do you really have to wipe everything to do a restore? Isn't there like just and "app restore" or something? ITs been a long ady and its late, i dunno. ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? I don't know what your machine came with, but mine included a separate recovery and software CDs -- so it would be possible to install straight of the software CD. If Apple has stopped doing that, curse them.Second suggestion is that my OS 9 era recovery CD included a disk copy image of the actual installation, in which case you could drag and drop the AppleWorks directory to reinstall it. Third suggestion: if your recovery CD includes a bunch of pkg files, a program like Pacifist should allow you to install individual components. Mac OS X is designed such that applications are distributed in bundles and you can (in theory) move those bundles anywhere. II2II Intelligence officer in training. |

Doesn't the Installer have a 'Custom' option? If not, as I recall, TomeViewer can help. I forget how, but it can. . . . /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

So far, the only way the Restore CD's that came with the 'Book want to work is by wiping the drive and restoring it to factory setup, and there is no option (at least, not that I've found) to install just one program, i.e. AppleWorks. Plus, there don't seem to be any PKG's or Tomes to play with- instead, there are CD-sized disk images that refuse to mount in the finder- only the software restore program can use them, I guess. Since my 'Book came with AppleWorks, legaly, would it be wrong to just download it from a warez-type site, or have some kind soul burn me a copy of the install CD? I don't think so... but I don't want to cross any lines with the all-powerful mods, either.... ;-) Okay, off to class. SpaceBoyOfficial MLA Raconteur AppleBASIC FOREVER! That'd be licensed use according to any legitimate take on the law that I know of (good thing it's not Quirk I HATE those scum-merchant's licensing practices). If it's like the old days, on some apps you could download the demo and then use your serial # to enable blocked functions. Give Apple a call, they should have a canned answer to this by now one would think. Sounds like a bug in their distribution method to me.jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. Same thing happened to me. I *thought* I was installing Appleworks off of the CDs that came with my G4 Tower off the the "software restore" CDs and ...I now have OS 9.2 installed and some OS 9.2 stuff but no Appleworks. :( Oh well, I think I'm going to float the $50 for Thinkfree office. I like it better than Appleworks in some regards. -K- 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

Is that in the folder "configurations" on the Software Restore CD? on my Software Restore, I can mount it all fine, pull off the apps I need (appleworks, imovie, itunes, the browsers etc) and they're usable in minutes. That -seems- to be how to get a single app off the CD dana Quadra 605 Obsessions

Yeah. It should just be a standard Disk Copy image file. At least the one that came with my iMac was, anyway. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

i didn't catch where applesworks was located exactly, but if you all need something to install packages off osx cds. It works well, i've used it to install dvd player on unsupported machines and to replace a few corrupted apps (due to some overclocking adventures. check it outhttp://www.charlessoft.com/ it's pacifist _______________________ Sgt.
