Before my question, here's a rough description of my network...I have a PPC500 PowerBook (I love that Mac!) with an external 56k modem running IPNetRouter, a 33MHz (woohoo! overclocked) LC475 and a standard Q605 both running HTTP (and FTP) servers. I only have one of the servers exposed to the outside world. So looking at the server logs I notice that my Web server gets hit all the time by people trying to hack in - I expect that, and I consider it to be my sacrificial server. However my other (intranet) server also gets hit by hackers. Not often, and no damage has been done, but my question is.... how is it possible that anyone can 'see' my server from the outside world? As I say, port 80 is only mapped to my web server, not my intranet server. And just as a side question, does anyone know of any good port sniffing utilities for Mac? cheers Flash! 68k ParaMedic |

well searching for 'purple cycle' has not yeilded any results yet....but I'm still looking. i get kinda scared when cruise into a hackers site coz crap knows what they are going to do to me while I'm there! anybody know any *safe* ones? I'm not interested in hacking from the perspective of trying to maliciously hack other people. But it seems to me that there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained from learning a few hackers tricks. Who knows, that knowledge could be used for good instead of evil...? cheers Flash! 68k ParaMedic |

Flash, are you running Linux or Mac OS on your servers? Because if you're running Mac OS, then you probably have lower chances of getting hacked. Also, The Force does have a light side as well as a dark side, depending on which side you work for. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
