DAMN! 4GB in a 230? I don't mind the Greyscale screen... I just want a battery that works!! I'm very torn... I like the Duo... but for all it can do (and can't do), I don't know that if I had a 4 hour charge on a battery, that I'd actually USE the thing much... I'd definatly need a micro-dock with ethernet, for in the cafe. At this time, my favourite 68k PowerBook is... well . . . technically speaking . . . with the IDE and color LCD upgrades . . . it's not EXACTLY a 230 *cough* add another zero *cough*. . . . but it's at least as 68k correct as your StrongARM equipped MicroDuo! jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

My Outbound 2030E (named "Rebound") is my favorite cause I got it for $3 at a garage sale and it was made right hear in Boulder Colorado, where I live. It runs this ancient cellular automata program that I used to really like and the track rod pointing device is cool once you get used to it. (OK, its not a "Powerbook" but it is an Apple-compatible 68k notebook computer)And the 190cs (named "20DollarPowerBook") ain't too shabby neither (although I wish I could find an ethernet PCMCIA card at a garage sale ). The 190cs is a good little desk-side and portable workhorse for 68k fun. Welcome aboard, that's very cool! Please tell us all about how you set up the 190. That'd make a great topic for your first thread posting. Candypunk was just asking about that, I think one other comrade has that kind of setup working, but I don't remember who it was?jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. http://www.orinocowireless.com/template.html?section=m57&page=126&envelope=93This orinoco card works under 7.5.2, and oddly, 8.6, 9.0, and "9.4." Clearly they are a little confused, but the 7.5.2 sounds promising. Pop that into a PB 190 or 500 series w/ PC card adapter, and it sounds to me like you've got complete 68k freedom within 150 feet of anyone who can't keep you out of their wireless network (or your own...). Any problems there? The card is type II PCMCIA. The 500 series PC card cage would support, that I hope. At PCconnection (online retailer) it lists the minimum OS at 8.0, but still not a problem there. Macmall says 7.5.2. I like the sound of it. Is this your model, Kevinrist? Should we rush out to buy it? Only $60! { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } Edited by - candyPunk on 03 Nov 2002 22:57:36 |

Hmm... If I recall the 500 series can do IrDA... if that's true, then I think I seriously need to consider that for MY laptop, so it can talk to my Newton, AND use the Orinoco card I use IN the Newton...I'm seeing the liabilities of Duos A Newton is like a MicroDuo, but arguerably is easier to customize w/ the 2 PC card slots... ALOT easier to get Ethernet on, and a faster modem. ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

I have 6 PowerBooks: a 100, a 170, a Duo 230 (w/color screen), 2 190's and a G3 upgraded 1400c. The 1400c is my fave, of course, but my fave 68k is my European keyboard-equipped PB 190. Yeah, it's the grayscale model. Yeah, it's only 33MHz. Yeah, it only has 8MB RAM and a 500MB HD, running OS 7.5.3. All that, and I love it! It's immaculate, love the sleek, black case, too. Travels well. Battery lasts over 2 hours-the original 1995 battery, at that! I had a 540c for 2 years (2000-2002), but I gave it to a friend after getting the 1400c. It was awesome. I'm hoping to get another, then THAT would have to be my fave. But it's really close between that and a 190cs. Really close. If I find a nice 190cs before a 540c, then THAT will be my fave. The 190cs and the 540c/550c are the fatest 68k PBs, and they are really comparable. The 540c looks way cool, but the 190 has the svelte form factor of the 5300-series, plus it's all black! But then again, if I locate a 550c THAT would be the winner...but what are the odds?!;-)HeatherEarly to mid 1990's Macs rule, girlfriend! |

Yes, it's a 2300c. Anyway, my 190 is my fave. I really hope to find a nice 190cs someday. I love the feel of the keyboard on the 190s. Overall, the form factor, keyboard and sleek black case combine for a winning combination. I mean, it's a classic PowerBook. The modern TiBook and IceBook are awesome, but they less resemble the original PowerBooks. They can do a lot more than these old things, and faster, but that doesn't make them "better". For their time, the 68k PowerBooks did a lot, and they STILL do a lot. Comparing them to the new ones is insane, and not the point, anyway. Just because something is older doesn't make it obsolete! And, the 190 STILL looks modern, unlike most PC laptops from 1995!Early to mid 1990's Macs rule, girlfriend! |

Well, I really am torn between the 540c and the 190cs. It's really a close call between those two PBs. Some days I think it's the 190, others it's the 540c. I kinda miss my 540c, but I love my 190. I'm looking for a 190cs, but if I find a 540c in great shape first, a 540c it will be! HeatherMy Macs: PBs:1400c,190(2),Duo230,170,100 PPC:7200/120,5200CD,6115CD 68k:LC575,840AV,Classic |

In terms of actual work, yes. In terms of games, probably not. A 386 laptop with MSDOS is much better for playing games. All of the Apogee DOS games will run, along with many others. Hehehehe, I was just about to start this thread in the Help section(?), but then I thought that it belongs in the PB section. I come here and low and behold someone was nice enough to stqrt it for me. Thanks guys ;) .I'm more concerned with the 540c versus the Duo 280c. It seems that my little 280c has died from the fall (the official cause of death has been listed as blunt force trauma to the head). I'm now contemplating my next 68k Powerbook. If I can find one I'll get the 100 because I still have a ton of software left over from my SE. Only about half was compatible with my Duo. Kevinrist, how does the PC card work with the 540? How about Airport? My familiarity with the 540 is not as great as the Duo, did it have a PC card slot? --- The problem with computers is they do exactly what you tell them to. Now where's that fuggin 'any' key? Macs liberated thus far: SE-30, Performa 6320CD and Duo 280c. |

Auctually the 500 series need a PCMCIA card cage to work with PCMCIA cards. These are quite rare and normally go up to $80 or so on ebay. I was lucky and traded my MP100 for one. Please note if you have a PowerPc upgrade in the 500 series (which is a total waste, ruine a true 68k like that!!!) you will need a Rev. C card cage.

Actually, my little PB 100 from '91 is still running and looking great! The battery is long dead, but the PB itself is in mint condition, and it even has the external floppy drive. I love this little PowerBook. In fact, it was the first PB I got, and although it's like having a Classic or an SE in a laptop case, I love it. In fact I wrote an article about it: http://www.lowendmac.com/myturn/2k1211.html It's a fave 'Book of mine! :-)HeatherMy Macs: PBs:1400c,190(2),Duo230,170,100 PPC:7200/120,5200CD,6115CD 68k:LC575,840AV,Classic |

Good point. Btw, Heather, if you want a 190cs, all you have to do is swap the screen on your 190 with the screen from a 190cs or 5300cs. If you're lucky enough to score a 5300c with a fried mobo and good screen though, you can go for the real gold - put the 5300c's active matrix colour display on your 190 and have the world's first 190c. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

Gosh, sorry it's taken me so long to get back here re: the 802.11 PB 540c. I guess I was naive/didn't know what I was doing; I had wanted drivers for the 1400, scrounging around Orinoco's website, and found two versions: v. 7.1, which said it was compatible with PB's starting with the G3, I believe; and v. 6.0, which was compatible with the 1400/2400/3400; also, I think in a footnote, it said v. 6.0 was compatible with the 190. So, I figured that meant the drivers would work on a 68k; I managed to snag a PC Card Cage on eBay, blended it all togehter-and it worked! Can't vouch for the strength/distance, I've only used it in a small space, but it works.I think I was lucky to find the drivers when I did, I looked again recently, adn I think Orinoco's been bought once or twice since then! Keep up the good work, old macs rule! -Kevin numerous old macs-including a Color Classic being redeployed just today as a dedicated fax-receiver.
