Obviously, I'm going to need to be very precise. What kind of soldering iron will I need? All the small ones I've seen haven't been very hot. How am I to unsolder the current occilator? I've tried on some dead boards to unsolder them, and the solder hasn't melted. What kind of solder should I use? They always say "heat the work, not the solder," but is that possible in this case with such small components? I'll let you guys chew on that mass of ignorance for a while.

"Solder suckers" and solder braid are good tools to have (the sucker will do just that to any molten solder, and the braid is used for absorbing solder)

Another method is to grip the component, heat the solder and pull it off the board. The all you need to do is tidy up the holes/circuitboard before placing and soldering the new component.

I use a butane gas powered soldering iron for just about everything - it has excellent temperature control. Considering that you can pay $2000 or more for a 'real' soldering station it's probably a bit out of reach for the average hoibbyist. However I do recommend that you spend at least $100 and get a decent iron with good quality (and replaceable) tips.

cheers

Add liquid silicium in yours solders, it's a good hot absorbent.
And a supra-conductor like the platinium.
