I have a Performa 575 with a 230 MB HD, 36 MB RAM, and a full 040. I tried to install A/UX on it today. I copied System Enabler 065 v1.1 to the boot disk, stuck in the CD and the boot disk, and I was greeted with the A/UX install booter. The necessary files were loaded from the CD, the window said it was booting, the screen went blank, and.........

NOTHING!

The screen didn't come back and none of the drives made any noise.
Will A/UX run on the 575? If so, how do I get it to work?

Well, the 575 was released in 1994, and the last Macs that were officially supported by A/UX were released in '92 and '93 (Q950, Q800 and Q650). So it could be that the 575 just won't work with it. I know that Apple CD drives faster than 2X (which also came out in that '93-94 period) don't work properly with A/UX. And A/UX, like many Unixen, is very machine/hardware-specific.

It could be that it doesn't support the 575's video controller. In my experience messing around with 68k and NuBus PPC Linux distros, video controllers are some of the most variable items from Mac to Mac.

According to the Monitors control panel, the 575 has MEMCjr video with 1 MB VRAM. Do any other supported machines have this video configuration?

The MicroQuadras are officially unsupported also. Has anyone gotten A/UX to run on a 605? Dana?

Thas what I thought, but I did enough leg-work!
Has anybody ever seen a family tree of the entire Mac OS laid out in terms of ASIC/Architectural evolution/timeline?

That might make interesting content for the site, not to mention being highly educational and a good reference tool for this kinda crap. The li-nixie newsgroups are full of .txt reference material as are the dev notes, but a graphical display would be tres chic!

Well, obviously I ain't the Muse, but IIRC Dana has posted previously saying A/UX won't install on the MicroQuadras, precisely because the video controller is unsupported. Oh well.
