Wanted to list this in conquests, but I got it in a swap, so I figure it doesn't qualify...... but in exchange for a SCSI cable and a serial cable, I got a nice IIsi ROM for my SE/30. Frankly I don't notice any difference in performance, but I like the idea of having it, and I like that it contributes to the very subtle "frankenmac-on-the-inside" vibe, along with the A/UX installation I have on it. Speaking of which, what exactly is the IIsi ROM supposed to do? I didn't have MODE32 installed beforehand, so I suppose the Mac OS wasn't able to address the full 20MB of installed RAM, is that right? What about the A/UX side? I guess I should post this particular question to the Unix forum. So off I go... Matt No rank Permanent 68k roommates: Q605 w/full '040, 36/1.2G/enet/7.6.1/NetBSD SE/30 w/IIsi ROM, 20/500/enet/A/UX |

The ROM stand for read only memory, it basically Apple code burned into a chip that makes the mac run. There is no benefit in putting an si rom into another mac contrary to popular belief : ).JAG http://www.jagshouse.com - the web's oldest classic Mac site, used Mac goodies for sale. |

You figured out the one benefit: a IIsi ROM makes the SE/30 32-bit clean, so you will be able to see all 20MB of RAM. Before, you would have had to use mode32.

Yeah, but the IIsi ROM enables you to run System 7.6 on your SE/30, which you can't do with the stock SE/30 ROM, even with Mode32. Or, if you're patient enough, with the instructions from Gamba or Born Again, you can trick OS 8 into running on the /30 with the IIsi ROM, which you also can't do with Mode32 and the stock ROM."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

There is no need to run 7.6 anyway when you can d/l everything that's in 7.5 and not in 7.5.5 for free from Apple and drop it into 7.5.5. Keep trying : )See this page for details: http://jagshouse.com/macos.html JAG http://www.jagshouse.com-classic Mac site Mac goodies for sale. 128, 512, Plus, SE, SE30, Classic, CII, CC, II, IIX, IICX, IICI, IISI, IIVX, IIFX, MacTV, 575, 660AV, 840AV, Q700, Q900, Q950, 6100 - 6500, 7100 - 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, 9600, iMac G4 |
