does anyone know why System 6.0.x, 7.0.x, and 7.5.x are available or download, yet they force people to remove downloadable versions of System 1 all the way to System 5? This makes no sense at all to me... btw i just installed System 7.5.3 on Basilisk II on Win98, which is atonement for having windows98 in the first place. seriously though, does anyone know the logic behind this?

But hey, at least Apple does give you some system versions for free...you pirate Windows 3.11 and you'll get a lawsuit shoved up your @$$ like PCs For Kids did back last year.

I lost the link. It was last year. It could still be on ZDNet though.

true... i wasn't thinking very clearly when i posted this at 3h30 am accusing Apple of not being logical is like accusing congress of passing legislation but i found the 7.5.5 update so now i can install all of the software that came with our performa 578 seven or eight years ago on Basilisk II

i'm still wondering why 7.1 and 7.6 arent available, while system 6, 7, and 7.5 are... 7.1 has that whole enabler thing, but doesnt apple have a bunch of those for download? and 7.6 is probably a better choice than 7.5.5 for most machines that will run both of them

System 7.1 isn't available for free download, because apparently they put some sorta 3rd party technology into it that prevents them from distributing it.

That's good for a laugh. Apple may have stuffed 3rd party technology into 7.1 Pro, but you would be hard pressed to find a feature in the standard 7.1 which wasn't in 7.0 or 7.5.5.

Based upon some comments on Apple's website, I think they decided to give away 7.5.5 since it supported a wide range of machines and was Y2K compliant. System 7.1 supports few PowerMacs, 7.6 requires 32-bit clean machines, and testing every version would be too expensive.

There's your answer, Apple owes Connectix money for every System shipped with the MODE32 technology in it! &.5.3 must be a sweet spot where the no longer were required to pay royalties or Connectix gave up enforcing its rights.

AFAIK, Mode32 is separate from System 7.1 -- at least you have to download it and install it separately when running System 7.1 on the SE/30.

The only difference between 7.0.1 and 7.1 to me is the minimal memory/prefered memory thing.

hmm this still doesnt explain why OS 5 and older are not available for free... maybe Apple just doent want to fool with it?
