i am the only person who has one! i wonder why thats the case? did they just not sell well or did they not produce as many of the 578? i feel special now or maybe my parents bought a "crappy" (i use that term as compared to other 68ks available at the time) computer; whatever the case i'm surprised it's survived as long as it has----- Special Ops, 578th Performa Division Fort Llama, Memphis Tennessee 68k Macs Liberated: 1 Edited by - llamaboy487 on 26 Oct 2002 11:06:00 |

No! The Performa 578 isn't a crappy computer, no way! I'm not sure though how many 578s were produced, although i do believe that more 575s were made...i see 575s all the time.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

The 575 series of machines is really nice after a RAM upgrade, a VRAM upgrade, SSW upgraded to 7.6.1, and a full 040, and the machines aren't bad to begin with. They run 68k games very fast, and if a full 040 is installed, they can run NetBSD and Linux. I play Wolfenstein 3D, Pathways into Darkness, Warcraft II, and Abuse on my Performa 575 all the time, and they run well.BTW, does anyone know if there's a way to run the built-in CRT at anything above 640x480? Also, can I buy a soundcard for it? I've heard that LC PDS PAS16 cards are pretty cheap; will they work with this machine? Finally, is it possible to hack A/UX so that it will work on the 575? Yeah. Its no secret how nice you can make the 575. However, I don't believe you can get the display above 640x480, which sucks. Ah well.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

well i didnt mean "crappy" but i guess for the time it was released it was alright... but whats the difference between the P578 and the LC 575? what was the purpose of the whole performa series for that matter?----- Special Ops, 578th Performa Division Fort Llama, Memphis Tennessee 68k Macs Liberated: 1 |

It was supposed to be a general consumer line and came bundled with software and at times even printers, IIRC.ISTR that one of the LEM articles stated that many of the models were specific to different store chains so they could advertise that they would beat any competing price for the same model . . . guess what . . . it was a sure thing that nobody could find a lower price! The computers are likely the same, but one might have had a bigger drive or more RAM etc. One model came with the MPEG Media System Card, but it was probably a 5xxx variant, I don't think it was a 580 variant, I don't remember. jt ™. yeah our 578 came with a Color StyleWriter Pro and a bunch of educational stuff, such as groiler's encyclopedia, and a MordorSoft thing about dinosaurs (which btw was pretty much a HyperCard stack) so i guess thats the whole Performa thing... but why didnt they just do that with the LC's instead of re-branding? i guess Apple's business decisions have never made much sense Oh and i've edited my signature to show my status as the sole 578 owner of the MLA ----- Special Ops, 578th Performa Division Llama Province, Memphis, Tennessee, USA Owner, only Performa 578 Liberated Edited by - llamaboy487 on 26 Oct 2002 21:20:42 |

There was that, and also a deal that Apple signed with a couple of stores promising them exlusive model numbers. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

HAR!™Either way, i reckon it would have been more useful to have 8 megs in the base model, and 12 megs in the next one up. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
