ok, this http://www2.sunrem.com/sun01.w?pt=210-613 will not actually work in a Mac SE will it? isn't it just for the SE/30? (i wish i DID have an SE/30, but i'd be very happy if my SE had ethernet)

Holy cr@p -- even if it did work in an SE (which, AFAIK, it doesn't--it's SE/30 and IIsi-compatible only), $29 is a lot of $$$ for that item. Usually one can get them off of eBay for half that price, or less.

Also, try making an inquiry on the LEM swap list. I got one there in a swap for a Mac monitor adapter, and IIRC the person who had it (forgot who it was, unfortunately) had a ton of them and would have sold it to me outright for $6 plus shipping.

I tried a Cabletron PDS card from my 650 in my SE and it wouldn't even spin the fans. I had already installed the drivers so now every time it boots it shows a network logo with an X through it and it goes away. I can't figure out where the driver is hiding. I checked control panel and there is nothing there but under the apple menu is "Ethernet Status" I am not as familiar with pre 7.0.x systems. I realize extensions and control panels were inits and cdevs. The question is.. Where are they hiding?

an update to this, i found one on ebay for $10. more than i wanted to pay to get an SE online, but oh well. i also goy another SE FDHF, since the one i have isnt working properly. as soon as i get a chance, i'm gonna hook up those 2 hard drives i have on the other one, 2 internal floppies, and an external 800k floppy that i should also be getting soon... then i just need to figure out what software to put on it to get it serving or something.
