In which system were the voice recognition functions introduced into the MacOS? The ones that let you accomplish tasks by speaking them ("open folder, quit application," etc.)? They are some of the coolest features in any OS!

Voice recognition was intoduced around the same time as the first Power Macs and Quadra AV's. At that time, it was System 7.1.2, but I think it wasn't seen in the OS until Mac OS 7.5 or later.

System 7.0 couldn't handle voice recognition, but I do remember it is able to do voice output of text. (I.E. Voices in the Speech Control Panel)

Ah! You're right - that's what I was thinking of. In that case, 7.1 had it bundled. It came w/ my quadra. I thought it was usable on my grandmother's SE(She ran 7.0), but I was thinking of the text-to-speech.

It came bundled on the Quadra running 7.1 because it has a DSP chip onboard which allows Speech Processing.

The Power Mac's on the othr hand didn't have it come bundled until 7.5 was released, due the lack of a seperate DSP chip and the original code had to be modified to handle the PPC DSP.

My 660av had it set up and working under OS 7.5.3. It 's a lot of fun to play with but you have to be with in about 3 inches of the mic to get it to recognise the commands correctly. With the mic built right into the AV monitor this makes it a little uncomfortableto try to use it practicaly.Another thing is that on the 68k machines you have to have the RAM maxed out other wise you can't use the other audio features like the CD player or memory intensive programs while voice recognition is active. Mac OS 9.0 has really address many of the issues with the voice recognition and it works much better then it use to, but still I find it a little slow to use with any regularity.

Where is the control panel located? It doesn't seem to be in the speech control panel in my 660 A/V running 7.5.3, and I can't find it!

It's probably a custom-install option

Damn voice recognition isn't even on the 7.6 installer CD!

Maybe if I upgraded to 8 or 8.1, I would get them, but my Quadra only has 16 megs of RAM and I don't want the system to drain all my resources. 7.5.3 only takes 2-2.5 megs

It's not on OS 8.x at all so don't upgrade if voice recognition is the only reason you would be upgrading. I found this out the hard way when I upgraded to 8.1 and the control panel was removed by the 8.0 installer.

Being that you are attempting to install it on a Quadra, keep in mind that Gestalt ID's play a role. Speech Recognition is only installed on the Quadra 660AV and 840AV, as well as Power Mac's.

I have a 660 A/V and it still isn't there.

well that teaches me something. I thought you HAD to have a PPC to do speech recognition.

Myself, I've used it a LITTLE bit, and I'm planning on doing more with my PPC9500, as it's going to be a server for my other systems, and also a serail terminal of my OS X box.
