I just pulled a Laserwriter Select 360 out of a garbage bin and humped it down the hill to the shop . . .

. . . it freakin' WORKS!

p.s. Does anybody know if there is a built in Win 98 driver for this puppy? It works great with the LW8 driver out of 9.1 over Appletalk, but the kid'll need to print from my K6 box as well as his 6290 media hub.

Try sending info to it via a generic PostScript driver.

The Select 360? Is that the small one that lacks PostScript?

Nope, it's the high end of the LW Select series w/600DPI, Postscript Level 2, PCL(?) and it's got Appletalk, Serial and Parallel Ports. The only thing missing seems to be Ethernet, which won't be an issue.

It'll be perfect for the rug rat to use as a dual platform printer. I even have a little SohoWare Print Server that should work to run it off ethernet from the PC so he won't need to keep it in his room.

PCL is a preinter language used by HP.

It's what the DeskJet/DeskWriter series uses.

I have an embarrassing number of printers...

our original HP DeskWriter we bought with the SE still works... after I clean all the ink gunk off the logic board anyways... cracked a ink cart.

I have an ImageWriter II and another for parts.

an HP LJ6MP that needs a good cleaning and something unstuck from the rollers.

Personal Laserwriter NT that needs naught but a toner refill

Personal LW 300 (the cheap one that only has serial port and speaks ASCII or something)

Epson Stylus Colour 600 (Works perfect... but it's too damn loud)

brand new HP DJ 825

DeskWriter 320 and DeskJet 340 for w/ Newton

5 LW II printers, ready to be worked on to make at least one useable.

edit: misnamed the Person LW 300 as a LW Select 300

tee hee! I'll match your fourteen and raise you one 40" inkjet plotter! I thought you had me beat there for a bit!

Alps Allegro Something-or-other LQ Dot Matrix that will work w/Serial->Parallel
Epson Stylus Color (original) w/appletalk card
Epson Stylus Color 800 w/appletalk card
Epson Stylus Color 800 Parts/Spare Machine
ImageWriter II
ImageWriter Wide Carriage
LaserWriter IIg - The only one I use constantly in the shop
LaserWriter IInt
LaserWriter IIg x 3 for parts or to fix
LaserWriter Select 360
Canon C5?? PC-Inkjet/Fax/Copier that will work w/Serial->Parallel
Canon C5?? PC-only Inkjet/Fax/Copier (too stupid to work w/adapter) for outgoing faxes
40" Roland CammJet (inkjet/vinyl cutting plotter)

The four extra LaserWriter II's just seem to need new pickup rollers.

I knew what PCL was, just didn't know if I got the acronym right!

DOH! I forgot to add my HP DeskJet 612!

I guess we match for number of printers, but I think you beat me out for some serious cool/useful points. The Wide Carriage... mmm!

I'm just a piker. We've only got a few printers around here:

  • HP Desjet 1600CM (networked, maxed on RAM)
  • Epson Stylus 850NE (networked)
  • Epson Stylus 880
  • Stylewriter II
  • HP OfficeJet G85

I tend to give laser printer finds away, as I don't like the ozone generated by 'em. The 1600CM is an amazing workhorse, it never breaks...

I have a few too, but Mac printers are harder to come by where I live:

Mac:

* IW II
* StyleWriter II
* Color StyleWriter 1500

PC:

* HP LaserJet 5L
* Canon BJ-200

I've been trying to find a laser printer for my Macs, but that hasn't happened yet, nice find, I wish I could come up with something like that.

Oooo Plotter!

Great find! The trash never fails to provide an interesting supply of computer parts. I don't have any Apple LaserWriters, but I do have a couple HP LaserJets that my Macs can probably use. Some interesting stories behind some of them, too.

Okay, brace yourselves:

Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4050 somebody was asking like $75 at a garage sale. Brand spanking new (was sitting for a year). It had the original toner cartridge with an 'unpopped cherry'. They had won it in an office raffle and it was just sitting around in their house because they didn't have a computer. It makes you wonder about some people with the Macs so easy to use and all. Anyway, I'm poor (cheap) and passed up on the offer that day hopeing it wouldn't sell and I could come back the next day and get it cheaper. So I bite my fingernails that night in bed and go back the day after the sale and talk her husband down to $25. SOLD! You'll see the 4050s everywhere like in hospitals, behind service desks in supermarkets, or in banks because they're so good. It's PCL 6 and PostScript and gets 1200dpi in best quality mode, has RAM upgrade slots, a spot for a JetDirect print server card (wish I had one of those). The only thing this baby can't do is print in color.

My other printers:

Lexmark z13 for photos and stuff (got it on sale)

Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4P (needs a new transistor on the door
sensor board) $10 at a garage sale

A pair of HP DeskJet 500's (B&W) I pulled out of the garbage (gave one to my dad)

Apple ImageWriter or two, Sometimes I actually turn it on so I can hear That Sound

Lots of coils/transistors/ic's/resistors/capacitors/LEDs/stepper motors/etc. from other printers that weren't so lucky.
